Blue Earth Area honors teachers

BLUE EARTH — Blue Earth Area staff, students and members of the community gathered at Hamilton Hall on Wednesday to honor educators and retirees, as well as name the district’s 2018 teacher of the year.

The Minnesota Teacher of the Year program, now in its 54th year, is the oldest recognition program in Minnesota to honor excellence in education.

To honor the teachers nominated for the teacher of the year award, students, colleagues and members of the community spoke about how each teacher has left a positive impact on Blue Earth Area and their students’ lives.

The nominees for teacher of the year were:

o Julie Ackerman, high school science;

o Becky Anderson, sixth-grade science;

o Alicia Barke, high school math;

o Robyn Beach-Olson, kindergarten;

o Luke Beyer, kindergarten;

o Terri Cue, fifth grade;

o Keli Enser, first grade;

o Shelly Moeller, early childhood special education;

o Donna Nawrocki, high school emotional and behavioral disorders;

o Sheri Schneider, K-5 Title I coordinator and literary specialist;

o Kim Sickler, first grade;

Following the speeches, Cue was named teacher of the year.

Seventh-grader Eloise Blair spoke about how passionate Cue is about her students, and how she will go above and beyond to make sure that they are successful.

“Her classroom mantra is ‘Believe,’ and I guarantee that every single student in her classroom knows that Terri believes in each of them 100 percent of the time,” Blair said.

Cue said she was surprised to receive the honor, and thanked the staff for all its hard work to make the district great.

“There’s a lot of positives about Blue Earth Area in a tough year,” she said. “There are so many good things about our stuff and this staff makes you look good.”

Blue Earth Area educators and staff retiring in 2018 also were honored at the event. The 2018 retirees are middle school social studies teacher Al Cue, special ed paraprofessional Peggy DeMarce, kindergarten teacher Sandy Hanson, fourth-grade teacher Todd Schmidtke and third-grade teacher Kate Warmka.
