State, W’bago reach accord

WINNEBAGO — Winnebago City Council has approved an agreement with the Minnesota Department of Transportation to share the construction cost of the upcoming Highway 169 resurfacing project.

According to the agreement, the city has requested that paving and utilities construction be added to the project at the city’s expense. The city also will pay a construction engineering charge equal to 8 percent of the cost of the added construction requested by the city. The estimated cost is $90,500.

The council reviewed the agreement at its last meeting and, according to City Administrator Chris Ziegler, both the city’s utility committee and City Engineer Travis Winter recommended that the council approve it.

Councilman Scott Robertson said it is time to focus on construction instead of continuing to make temporary fixes.

“It’s going to cost some money, but it’s worth it in the long run,” he said.

Winter said MnDOT will likely have a bid amount for the project and the total cost to the city by the next council meeting in May. Construction is scheduled to start in August.

In other action, the council:

o Approved the purchase of eight picnic tables with concrete pads installed at the municipal campground for $9,400.

o Approved the city’s sponsorship of Bago Fun Fest, to be held June 15-17.

o Approved free swimming at the pool for the weekend of Bago Fun Fest.
