Welcome asks for cut of funds

WELCOME — City of Welcome officials expressed concerns this week about not receiving a share of Fox Lake Conservation League charitable gambling proceeds.

Council members said they were under the impression the city was to receive some funds from the group and could then decide how to use it. The League manager said the group gives most of the money to conservation and wildlife efforts.

The council requested some funds for playground equipment. The League’s manager suggested a request for equipment already bought is not eligible for monies. City officials say there is more equipment to be bought. The manager asked the council to submit a written request to the League. He suggested sending it before Tuesday, which is the monthly date for the League’s board of directors meeting.

The League manager reminded the council that the group has helped with projects in the city such as the Summer Festival, defibrillator for the fire department and the bike rodeo sponsored by Welcome/Sherburn Police.

In other city news:

o The council accepted with thanks the contribution from Valero for the Summer Festival.

o Spring cleanup and appliance pickup will be scheduled by the clerk and driver’s licenses will be checked to ensure that those dropping off items are residents of Welcome.

o A bid from Todd Oeschle for the Karl property was accepted with some discussion to make sure he will demolish the house and clean up the property. The council asked that he do this within six months of the property transfer.

o The council met in a closed session to discuss the trailer park.

o The next meeting of the council will be 6 p.m. March 20 at City Hall.
