FFA banquet coming up Sunday

SHERBURN — Don’t forget there’s a free “Lunch and Learn” beginning 11 a.m. today at the Senior Citizens Center in Sherburn. The topic for this month is “Essential Oils and Aromatherapy.”

A meal of potato soup and sandwiches will be served after the presentation.

Anyone interested is invited to attend.

Grilled hamburgers with all the fixings will be served from 6-8 p.m. tonight at the Sherburn American Legion. Everyone is welcome.

The regular monthly steak and shrimp night will take place 5:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Legion Club in Sherburn. The public is always invited to attend.

There will be a FREE “family swim” from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday at the indoor swimming pool in Sherburn. An adult/parent must accompany children. Bring your water toys.

All families are invited to attend.

The annual Martin County West FFA Banquet will be held Sunday at the high school in Sherburn. A social time will be 5-5:30 p.m., with the banquet starting around 5:30 p.m.

This event culminates the FFA season. FFA members will be recognized for their accomplishments throughout the year and new officers for the 2018-2019 school year will be introduced.

If you have a child who is an FFA member, you’re eligible to attend this banquet with them.

There will be no open gym Sunday afternoon at the high school due to the FFA banquet being held.

A 55+ Drivers Education four-hour refresher class will be held 5:30-9:30 p.m. March 19 in the library at the MCW school in Trimont. The deadline to sign up is March 12. To register, please call MCW Community Education at (507) 764-2336.

A “Kids and Canvas” painting class for kids kindergarten through second grade will be 3-5 p.m. March 12 and March 19 in the art room at MCW Elementary School in Sherburn. The instructor will be Chelsea Brolsma. The cost for the class is $12 per student.

A child and parent “aquatics program” for children, ages 6 months to 5-years old will be coming soon at the indoor swimming pool in Sherburn. Each child must be accompanied in the water by an adult. Classes will meet 6:30-7 p.m. March 19-21. Contact Elizabeth Viesselman at the pool or email her at elizabethviesselman@mcwmavericks.org

Starting dates for practices of varsity spring sports at MCW are as follows: softball and track on March 12; baseball and golf on March 19. Junior high track will begin March 12 and junior high golf practice will begin March 19 (weather permitting).

The “Jump Rope for Heart” event, organized by Jolynn Janssen of our elementary school, raised $5,200 that will go to the American Heart Association. Thanks to Mrs. Janssen and the students who did a fantastic job.

Congratulations to Jaxson Rohman of the MCW/Fairmont Red Bull wrestling team who finished in first place for the 113-pound weight class last weekend at the Minnesota state wrestling tournament. Congratulations also to the entire Red Bull team and its coaches who took home second place honors in the team portion of the state meet. What an outstanding season they had.
