Red Bull sendoff slated for today

SHERBURN — There will be a sendoff for the Red Bull wrestlers who are headed to the state wrestling tournament at 8:30 a.m. this morning at Martin County West Jr./Sr. High School in Sherburn. The public is welcome to take part.

A steak, shrimp or smoked pork chop dinner will be held 4:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Sherburn American Legion Club. Martin County West class of 2018 will help with the serving.

The public is welcome. The cost for the meal is $15. You may buy tickets in advance from any senior class member or buy them at the door that night. Proceeds will help provide funds for their class trip.

Sherburn Lions Club will serve a pancake breakfast 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday in the cafeteria at MCW High School in Sherburn. The menu will consist of pancakes, eggs, sausage, milk, juice and coffee. Proceeds will go toward community projects. Everyone is welcome.

The Lions also will collect items for the local food shelf at the breakfast, so you’re encouraged to bring canned food items, paper products, etc., with you on Sunday.

A kickoff meeting for team captains of the 2018 Martin County Relay for Life will be 6-7 p.m. Tuesday in the main meeting room at Mayo Clinic Health System hospital in Fairmont. If you’re a team captain and unable to attend the meeting, you’re asked to send someone from your team so they can pick up your the information.

A free “Lunch and Learn” event sponsored by CREST will be held 11 a.m. March 7 at the Senior Citizens Center located at 21 E. First St. in Sherburn. The topic for this month will be “Essential Oils and Aromatherapy.” A meal of potato soup and sandwiches will be served.

MCW speech students recently competed in a tournament at Norwood Young America. Placing first in drama was Ashley Allen; first in duo were Sierra and Skylar Tumbleson; and placing fourth in discussion was Tristan Rabbe. The team from MCW took first place in the tournament for overall quality points.

Congratulations to Martin County Area gymnast Sabrina Segar who competed at the state gymnastics meet last weekend at the Sports Pavilion on the campus of the University of Minnesota. She finished 34th place overall in floor exercise at the state meet. Sabrina is a freshman.

Congratulations also to nine Red Bull wrestlers who will compete in the individual portion of the Class AA state wrestling tournament this week at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. They are Lucas Jagodzinske, Jaxson Rohman, Connor Simmonds, Jordan Wolter, Payton Anderson, Collin Steuber, Miles Fitzgerald, Nathan Simmonds and Tristan Lange.

State tourney action begins 9 a.m. Friday.

The entire Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bull wrestling team will take part in the team portion of the state tourney. They will wrestle South St. Paul in the quarterfinal round at 11 a.m. Thursday. This will be the first year either Fairmont or Martin County West has competed as a team at the state wrestling tournament.

Sherburn-Dunnell High School took wrestling teams to state in 1978, 1979 and 1987. Best of luck to the Red Bulls …

There will be no school tomorrow for any MCW schools due to the state wrestling tournament.
