St. John Vianney dinner coming up

FAIRMONT — The 14th annual St. John Vianney Dinner Dance will be held Jan. 27, starting with a social hour from 5:30-6:30.

A meal will be served at 6:30 p.m., followed by the alumni speaker and Friend of SJV speaking, starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Knights of Columbus is selling 850 $100 raffle tickets. The drawing will take place during the Dinner Dance. Raffle tickets can be purchased at the school or from the Knights of Columbus.

There also will be a live auction of class baskets at the event. After the basket auction, the dance will begin.

Tickets for the event are $60 each. For tickets or additional information about the Dinner Dance, contact St. John Vianney School at (507) 235-5304.

Jim Simser is being honored this year as the Friend of SJV. He, along with his late wife, WinnAnn Simser, has been an important part of the parish and school for many years. WinnAnn Simser was a fourth-grade teacher at St. John Vianney.

The alumni speaker is Dr. Bob Hilgers, son of the late Bob and Ann Hilgers.

Hilgers attended St. Paul’s Covent School in Fairmont, graduating in 1950. St. Paul’s Covent School was the Catholic school in Fairmont prior to St. John Vianney being built.

Following his graduation from Fairmont High School in 1954, Hilgers attended St. John’s University in Collegeville, graduating magna cum laude in 1957. He then was accepted into the University of Minnesota Medical School, graduating in 1961.

Hilgers is president and CEO of the Women’s Global Cancer Alliance, which works to advance women’s health, particularly those in need of cancer care in developing countries.

Hilgers is a board certified gynecologic oncologist and professor emeritus at the University of Louisville School of Medicine.
