Highway 4 work planned

SHERBURN — Minnesota Department of Transportation representatives this week met with the Sherburn City Council to discuss plans to improve Highway 4.

They said the project will involve Highway 4 from the Iowa state line to Highway 60. It would begin in 2022 and continue until 2027, with overlays and resurfacing.

Since Highway 4 goes through Sherburn, the two sides discussed possible infrastructure improvements, including pipes, culverts and other underground work, as well as sidewalk upgrades.

Council members identified old sidewalks in need of repair north of the post office.

The council asked if there could be a safety measure such as a guardrail along the bike path near I-90. Department of Transportation representatives said the safety engineer would be in charge of that, and also would be consulted about a painted crosswalk near the fire department building and Dollar General store.

The council mentioned that resurfacing and curb and gutters were done in the 1980s. The city will share maps of utility infrastructure under the road.

In other business at the council meeting, the public comments drew complaints about the sloppy painting of the hydrants and about things left out in yards.

The council then adopted a preliminary budget for 2018 and set Oct. 16 as a public hearing date.

The next council meeting will be 5 p.m. Oct. 16.
