20th Annual Martin County Pork Cook Off

FAIRMONT — The Agri-Business Committee of the Fairmont Area Chamber of Commerce and the Martin County Pork Producers announce the 20th Annual Martin County Blue Ribbon Pork Cook Off on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2017, at the Martin County Fairgrounds. The contest will be held 5-7 p.m. Ticket holders will enjoy mouth-watering pork cuisine from Green Mill Restaurant in Fairmont, Marina Lodge in Fairmont, Ambiance on Albion in Fairmont, Blazer Bar in Fairmont, Jo Jo’s BBQ of Fairmont, Fairmont Butcher Block, and Cup N’ Saucer Restaurant in Sherburn. Awards will be presented for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place pork entrees in both the People’s Choice and Connoisseur’s categories. Admittance is by ticket only and 400 tickets were sold at $8 each. There will be drawings for $10 gift certificates for those in attendance courtesy of the participating contestants and caterers. Exchange Club Seeks Nominees

FAIRMONT — Each year the Fairmont Exchange Club awards its most prestigious award “Book of Golden Deeds Award” to a special person that has dedicated their time and efforts to strengthening their community. The purpose of the Book of Golden Deeds Award is to recognize those citizens within the community whose self-sacrifice, responses to duty and other praiseworthy actions may pass unnoticed and unremembered by the general public. The award has been presented annually by the Fairmont Exchange Club since 1975. The recipient of last year’s award was Ernie Nuss.

Man charged in school phishing scam

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A Nigerian citizen has been arrested in a phishing scheme that targeted school districts in Connecticut and Minnesota in an effort to get employees’ personal information and file bogus tax returns, federal authorities said Friday.

Daniel Adekunle Ojo was arrested Thursday on fraud and identity theft charges at his home in Durham, North Carolina, according to an announcement by Connecticut U.S. Attorney Deirdre Daly. A federal magistrate judge ordered him detained and transferred to Connecticut.
