Five arrested in Ortiz shooting

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — Five suspects, including the alleged gunman, have been detained in the shooting of former Red Sox star David Ortiz, the Dominican Republic’s chief prosecutor said Wednesday.

A sixth suspect was also being pursued in the shooting, which witnesses said was carried out by two men on a motorcycle and two other groups of people in cars.

Authorities gave the name of the alleged shooter as Rolfy Ferrery, aka Sandy.

Authorities have declined to give a motive for the shooting at a popular Santo Domingo bar Sunday night.

Police Maj. Gen. Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte said the coordinator of the attack was offered 400,000 Dominican pesos, or about $7,800, to carry out the shooting. He said the alleged coordinator was among the suspects in custody.

U.S. takes aim at Iran’s Guard

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration on Wednesday imposed sanctions on an Iraq-based affiliate of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.

The Treasury Department said the penalties target the South Wealth Resources Company in Baghdad and two of its registered agents. It said the company and the two men are linked to the Guard’s foreign wing, or Quds Force, and have trafficked hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of weapons to Shiite militias in Iraq.

“The Iraqi financial sector and the broader international financial system must harden their defenses against the continued deceptive tactics emanating from Tehran in order to avoid complicity” in the Guard’s “ongoing sanctions evasion schemes and other malign activities,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.

The administration last month designed the Guard as a foreign terrorist organization.
