Libraries closed through Monday

All Martin County libraries will be closed from Saturday through Monday in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. Also, summer hours will begin Tuesday in Fairmont. Times are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Memorial Day events set in Fairmont

Memorial Day events will be held Monday in Fairmont. A flag-raising by the Boy Scouts will be held at 9:30 a.m. at Veterans Park. Following the ceremony, the Memorial Day program by the American Legion Post 36 and VFW Post 1222 will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 920 E. 10th St., Fairmont. The guest speaker will be Ernie Nuss. The Girl Scouts will conduct the wreath-laying ceremony. Everyone is invited.

Cancer survivor supper slated in Fairmont

Relay for Life of Martin County Cancer Survivor supper and program will take place June 11 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 920 E. 10th St., in Fairmont. Registration/social time will be 5-6 p.m.; supper will begin 6 p.m.; with the program starting around 6:45 p.m. All cancer survivors are welcome to come and eat free of charge. Caregivers are welcome to eat for a donation. Those who plan to attend are asked to RSVP before May 27 by calling or texting Torie at (507) 399-3667.

College News

Whitney Smith of Sherburn received the Winifred Tilden High Scholar Award from the department of kinesiology during an honors reception held April 26 at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.

The following area students received degrees and honors during graduation ceremonies held May 11 at Minnesota State-Mankato: Armstrong — Michael Larsen, bachelor’s degree in exercise science; Blue Earth — Tamara Armstrong, master’s degree in counseling and student personnel; Jennifer Howard, bachelor’s degree in alcohol and drug studies (magna cum laude); Butterfield — Stephanie Trejo, bachelor’s degree in social work (summa cum laude); Easton — Jenna Stevermer, bachelor’s degree in special education (cum laude); Ty Warmka, master’s degree in anthropology; Elmore — Lindsey Prokop, bachelor’s degree in biology (magna cum laude).
