Fairmont baseball shuts out St. James, 6-0

ST. JAMES — Fairmont right-handed starting pitcher Joey Flohrs and reliever Dan Brummond combined on a shutout to help power the Cardinals to a 6-0 Big South Conference baseball victory over the St. James Area Saints on Tuesday in St. James.

Flohrs allowed only three hits over five shutout innings of work to earn the pitching victory. The Fairmont junior recorded six strikeouts and issued three walks on the game.

Brummond gave up one hit in two scoreless frames of relief, striking out four and issuing three bases-on-balls for Fairmont.

Nick Eversman went 2-for-3, including a double, with two RBIs and scored a pair of runs to ignite the Cardinals’ eight-hit offensive attack.

Zac Ringnell went 2-for-4 for Fairmont, Zach Soelter went 1-for-2 and scored two runs, Cale Steuber tripled and scored a run, Jack Hested singled home a run, Dalen Keltgen singled and crossed the plate once, while Jacob Tennyson collected two RBIs via a sacrifice fly and a run-scoring groundout.

Fairmont pounced to an early lead with a solo run in the top of the first inning before erupting for four more in the third.

The Cardinals’ defensive unit produced yet another errorless effort in the field.

Carter Jones went 3-for-3, including a double, to top St. James Area’s offensive effort, while teammate Kobe Mohwinkel added a single.

Mohwinkel allowed six runs — five earned — on seven hits in five frames pitched to take the loss for the Saints. He struck out seven and walked three.

Jacob Brey notched three strikeouts and issued three walks in allowing one hit in two scoreless innings of relief for St. James Area.

Fairmont (3-1) travels to Marshall next Tuesday for another Big South Conference contest.

Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman 4, Cleveland 0 — Paxton Gravlin tossed six shutout innings, and battery mate Mitchell Prafke produced a triple, a single and one RBI while scoring two runs to propel the Jaguars to a Valley Conference victory over the Clippers on Tuesday night in Cleveland.

Gravlin displayed stellar control by recording seven strikeouts and issuing only one walk in pitching six innings of four-hit baseball to net the win.

Cayden Fischer struck out one batter in one scoreless and hitless inning of relief to earn the save for the Jaguars.

Owen Wolter and Jordan Wiederhoeft each singled and scored a run for the Jaguars, Fischer contributed an RBI single, while Ross Balcom singled with two outs in the top of the fifth frame to break up Cleveland ace pitcher Bryce Novak’s no-hit bid.

Ironically, Novak recorded five of his game-best 14 strikeouts during the top of the fifth frame. Unfortunately, two of those Jaguars reached on passed balls and scored two unearned runs against the Clippers’ hurler. Novak allowed four hits, walked one and hit two batters in six innings pitched to take the loss.

Novak doubled and tripled to spearhead Cleveland’s offensive effort, while Dan McCabe and Carter Dylla added singles.
