Martin Co. West hoopsters oust Windom in 3AA opener

TRIMONT — Martin County West senior forward Cheyenne Owens topped the Mavericks’ statistical charts to pace a 64-42 victory over the Windom Area Eagles during Section 3AA, South Sub-Section quarterfinal basketball action Saturday.

Owens poured in a game-best 19 points to top a balanced Mavericks’ scoring attack, while also generating game-highs of eight steals, six rebounds and five assists.

No. 4-seeded Martin County West (16-6) advances to play No. 1-seeded Pipestone Area (15-8) in a 6 p.m. Thursday sub-section semifinal in Windom. The Arrows gained the next round via a 61-22 rout over No. 8-seeded St. James Area in quarterfinal action.

No. 2-seeded Redwood Valley (16-8) faces No. 6-seeded Jackson County Central (9-15) in Thursday’s 7:30 p.m. sub-section semifinal in Windom. Redwood Valley downed No. 7-seeded Tracy-Milroy-Balaton, 67-46, while the No. 6-seeded Huskies upended No. 3-seeded Luverne, 51-49, to advance in the postseason.

Point guard Alyssa Williamson delivered 13 points and doled out three assists for MCW, Karlee Thiesse scored 11 points, while Samantha Meyer contributed eight points and six rebounds to the winning effort.

Madison Klima distributed four assists and pocketed three steals for the Mavericks, who made 28 of 51 field goals overall and 8 of 14 free throws on the game.

Martin County West built a 33-17 halftime advantage and never trailed in the playoff clash.

Windom Area ended the season with a 13-13 overall record.

Boys Basketball

Worthington 54, Fairmont 44 — Karasharo Ojulu and Terbuto Ochothow combined for 38 points to power the Trojans to a 10-point regular-season victory over the Cardinals during Big South Conference action Saturday in Worthington.

Worthington grabbed a 28-18 lead by intermission before playing Fairmont evenly on the scoreboard in the second half, 26-all.

Post player Wyatt Frank produced a double-double performance of 13 points and 15 rebounds to pace the Cardinals’ effort, while teammate Nick Eversman scored 13 points and distributed three assists.

Dustin Schultz supplied six points for Fairmont, while Lucas Denney added five points.

The Cardinals connected on 18 of 48 field goals overall, including only 2 of 14 behind the 3-point arc, and made 4 of 9 free throws on the game.

The Trojans hit 19 of 44 shots overall, including 8 of 17 from 3-point range, and 8 of 10 free throws.

Fairmont (10-13) plays host to Redwood Valley at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Cardinal Gym, while Worthington (14-9) travels to Sherburn tonight to face Martin County West.
