MCA’s Bachenberg, Segar qualify for state gymnastics meet

REDWOOD FALLS — Martin County Area gymnasts Anna Bachenberg and Sabrina Segar floored their Section 3 rivals to earn a pair of Class A individual state bids.

Bachenberg generated a first-place score of 9.225 points to capture the sectional floor exercise’s gold medal, while Segar tied sectional all-around champion Gracia Elias of Worthington for runner-up honors on the floor with 9.175s during Saturday’s eight-team competition in Redwood Falls.

Bachenberg, who also earned an individual state bid on the balance beam, and Segar placed fourth (34.15) and fifth (33.8), respectively, in the all-around to power the Magic to a second-place team total of 133.675 behind champion Worthington (141.75) and in front of third-place Jackson County Central (133.35).

Elias bested the entire all-around field with a gold-medal score of 35.9, including a first-place performance of 9.1 on the balance beam, while teammate Hali Bullerman captured both the uneven parallel bars (8.75) and vault (9.175) to guide Worthington to its fifth consecutive Section 3 team crown.

Worthington hits the equipment at Maturi Pavilion on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis in Friday’s 11 a.m. Class A team state competition.

Bachenberg, Segar, Section 3’s top three all-arounders and the next three non-top three all-arounders on each event advance to Saturday’s 11 a.m. Class A individual state meet back at Maturi Pavilion.

“Anna and Sabrina really executed their routines on the floor (Saturday) and earned their way to the state meet,” said Martin County Area head coach LeeAnn Steen. “They’ve both improved steadily throughout this season, so it’s a nice way to close out the year.”

Bachenberg capped her first tumbling pass on the floor with a one-and-a-half, executed her next series of front tucks and closed with a back handspring to a full to strike gold.

Segar, who also earned a sixth-place sectional medal on the vault with her 8.875-scored Tsuk, twisted a one-and-a-half during her initial pass, executed a front layout during the middle sequence and closed with a full.

Bachenberg highlighted her state-qualifying sixth-place showing on the beam with a pair of back handsprings before closing with a gainer full as her dismount for an 8.625.

“We started with a strong set of vaults in our opening rotation, and ended strong on the floor in our last rotation,” said Steen.

Emma Schultze produced a 10th-place vault of 8.75 to add scoring punch to Segar’s sixth-place total to highlight the Magic’s 34.8 total on the vault. Bachenberg (8.65), Ellie Schultze (8.525) and Anna Utermarck (8.45) rounded out MCA’s effort on the event.

Utermarck supplied an 8.475 to the Magic’s score of 35.3 on the floor, Emma Schultze tallied an 8.425, while Hailee Schuett chipped in a 7.725.

Emma Stevenson generated 34.55 points to net runner-up accolades in the all-around competition to pace Redwood Valley’s fourth-place total of 131.15, while Saphi McFarquhar also qualified for state in the all-around with a third-place score of 34.275 to top Marshall’s fifth-place team showing of 123.75.
