Waseca girls hockey rallies by Fairmont Area

WASECA — Isabella Sorenson netted two goals and distributed an assist to help power the Waseca Bluejays to a 4-1 victory over the Fairmont Area Cardinals during Big South Conference hockey action Monday night.

After a scoreless opening period, Fairmont Area junior forward Joni Becker produced an unassisted goal to stake the visitors to a 1-0 lead 7:55 into the middle segment.

Sorenson, however, answered with the equalizer at the 9:20 juncture by cashing in an assist from Jayde Pederson.

Cecelia Huttemier then joined passing forces with Pederson to set up Sorenson’s second goal of the contest at the 14:52 mark for a 2-1 Bluejays’ lead.

Paige Benson netted a goal off a double assist from Gabriela Armstrong and Sierrah Bakken to extend Waseca’s lead to 3-1 only 29 seconds later in the second period.

Waseca’s Clare Miller then capped the game’s scoring by converting Sorenson’s pass into the only goal of the third period at the 14:16 juncture.

Fairmont Area (4-21) awaits the outcome of today’s Section 3A seeding meeting for its first-round opponent and venue on Thursday.

Waseca (8-16-1), the No. 6 seed, faces No. 3-seeded Red Wing at 7 p.m. Wednesday night in a Section 1A first-round game at Prairie Island Arena in Red Wing.
