Crissinger, Lunn pace Fairmont’s win over Worthington hoopsters

FAIRMONT — Post player Taylor Crissinger and point guard Lexi Lunn gave credence to Fairmont’s senior night by combining for 43 points during the Cardinals basketball team’s victory over the Worthington Trojans on Tuesday night.

Crissinger produced a game-high double-double performance of 28 points and 14 rebounds to complement five blocked shots and four steals, while Lunn delivered 15 points to power Fairmont to a 64-58 Big South Conference decision over Worthington.

“Our only two senior players really stepped it up tonight,” said Fairmont assistant coach Chris Voss. “We didn’t panic when Worthington made a late run at us in the second half and found a way to regain our composure down the stretch.

“We just stuck with running our offense, made them foul us and then made enough free throws to win.”

Crissinger poured in 18 of her career-high 28 points before Maggy Totzke converted a late one-and-one situation to stake Fairmont to a 36-28 lead by intermission.

Worthington, however, assembled a 10-0 scoring surge during the second half to knot the game at 44 and 46 with less than 7 minutes remaining in regulation.

Madisyn Huisman, who finished with a team-best 18 points for the Trojans, drilled a 3-pointer and two free throws to sandwich teammate Payton Sauerbrei’s two charity tosses to ignite the deficit-erasing run.

Trailing 48-47 after two more Huisman free throws, Lunn single-handedly reeled off eight consecutive points to re-establish Fairmont’s lead to 55-50 with 3:17 remaining in the second half.

Cadence Becker’s floor-burning hustle set up one of Lunn’s jumpers before Crissinger’s steal led to Maggy Totzke’s ensuing assist to Lunn for a layup.

Olivia Hayenga tossed in two of her 12 bench points on a reverse layup to inch the Trojans within 58-53, but Crissinger literally took control on the boards down the stretch to nail the Cardinals’ triumph.

Crissinger connected on 8 of 12 field goals en route to 18 points during the opening half. Crissinger and Faith Olson combined to trigger Fairmont’s early 10-0 offensive avalanche with 9 minutes left in the first segment.

Crissinger swooshed one of her two 3-pointers off one of Totzke’s four assists before nailing a 15-footer off Lunn’s inbound pass. Olson tossed in the second of her two 3-pointers via Becker’s kickout pass from the low post before Olson slashed through right-wing traffic for a runner off a Crissinger assist to build an 18-7 lead.

Olson finished with eight points off the Fairmont bench, Totzke went 6-for-6 at the free throw line to account for all of her points, while Becker grabbed six rebounds and doled out four assists.

Sauerbrei finished with 14 points, four steals and three assists for the Trojans, while Hayenga went 5-for-6 from the floor to pace her 12-point effort.

Fairmont (6-11) travels to Blue Earth Area on Friday night for a 6 p.m. tipoff. Worthington (3-10) hits the road to Luverne on Thursday night.
