Fairmont 8th grade ‘A’ sweeps tournament; ‘B’ makes championship

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont eighth-grade ‘A’ boys basketball team went undefeated during the St. James weekend tournament, while the Cardinal eighth-grade ‘B’ hoopsters compiled a 2-1 record in their divisional tournament in St. James.

Gavin Junkermeier scored 12 points and David Maakestad netted 11 points to power Fairmont ‘A’ to a 44-22 first-round win over St. Peter.

Blake Hilgendorf tallied nine points in the Cardinals’ victory, while Jamie Mueller chipped in six.

Junkermeier and Maakestad each produced 16 points to pace Fairmont ‘A’ to a 42-37 semifinal triumph over St. James.

Junkermeier then poured in 19 points to ignite Fairmont’s 47-35 win over Jackson County Central in the ‘A’ tourney finals.

Hilgendorf contributed seven points to the Cardinals’ winning ways, while Brendan Schmidtke and Mueller chipped in six points apiece.

In B-squad tourney play, Jackson Holmers netted 16 points to guide Fairmont to a 24-11 opening win over St. Peter.

Carson Pomerenke chipped in four points for the Cardinals.

Holmers and Prince Lebbi scored four points apiece to pace Fairmont’s 18-13 semifinal decision over St. James.

Jack Hagen and Blake Hatfield tallied three points each for the Cardinals.

Jackson County Central edged Fairmont in the championship game, 25-19.

Holmers netted 10 points to top the Cardinals, Caleb Telkamp scored four points and Lebbi added three.

Fairmont swept both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ games against Martin County West on Jan. 10 in Fairmont.

Blake Hilgendorf scored 16 points and Owen Burmeister tallied 10 to pace the A-team’s 42-20 victory.

Jamie Mueller tallied six points, while Jackson Holmers supplied four.

Prince Lebbi netted six points to top the Fairmont B-squad’s 9-2 win.

Fairmont’s B-team captured its game against New Ulm, while the Cardinals’ A-squad lost to the Eagles on Jan. 8 in New Ulm.

Holmers scored 16 points, Lebbi netted 10 and Burmeister added six in the B-squad’s 38-7 victory.

Burmeister also scored 10 in the A-team’s 56-42 loss.

Holmers supplied eight points, Brendan Schmidtke and Mueller scored seven apiece, while Hilgendorf chipped in six.
