Mavericks stampede to win over Jaguars

TRIMONT — The Martin County West Mavericks stampeded by the Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther Jaguars, 71-39, in Valley Conference girls basketball action Tuesday night in Trimont.

Alyssa Williamson led the way for the Mavericks with 16 points and nine steals, while Cheyenne Owens and Karlee Thiesse each scored 12 points and brought down five rebounds. Owens also grabbed five steals to help the Mavericks on their way to a 25-steal performance.

Samantha Meyer scored nine points and brought down a team-leading six rebounds for MCW, Elizabeth Fisher scored eight points and Marissa Whitehead collected seven points and four steals.

Gabby Lange contributed five rebounds to the Mavericks’ winning ways.

Lydia Studer led the Jaguars with 10 points, while Jayme Balcom scored nine.

Michaelah Petrowiak brought down a team-leading six rebounds, while Rachel Stauter and Eden Studer each collected five boards.

Martin County West (7-4) plays at Janesville-Waldorf Pemberton on Friday.

The Jaguars (3-9) play host to St. Clair on Friday night in Northrop.

Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire 56, North Union 47 — The Titans beat the Warriors by nine in nonconference Iowa girls basketball action Tuesday night in Graettinger.

Chloe Lofstrom led the Warriors with a game-high double-double performance of 25 points and 14 rebounds, while teammate Brooklyn Prochniak scored nine points.

Vanessa Von Bank put up six points, while Maddie Rolling brought down five rebounds and Hope Steinberger grabbed three steals.

The Warriors shot 16-for-31 from 2-point range, 4 of 20 from 3-point distance and 3 of 12 from the charity stripe.

North Union (8-3) plays host to North Iowa on Friday night in Armstrong.

Boys Basketball

Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire 62, North Union 34 — The Titans stormed by the Warriors in nonconference Iowa boys basketball play Tuesday night in Graettinger.

Braden Pierce led the Warriors with 10 points and tied for the team lead with three steals.

Elliott Hagebock scored eight points, brought down 10 rebounds and dished out four assists, while Brendan Anderson dropped six points and grabbed three steals.

North Union shot 14 of 36 from 2-point range, 1-for-13 from 3-point distance and 3 of 10 from the free throw line.

North Union (1-9) hosts North Iowa on Friday night in Armstrong.

Truman/Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain 57, Cleveland 54 — Freshman post player Adam Heckman collected a game-high 23 points and grabbed six rebounds to help the Jaguars fend off the Clippers by three during Valley Conference action Monday night in Cleveland.

Owen Wolter contributed 11 points and a team-leading five steals to the Jaguars’ winning performance, while teammate Paxton Gravlin scored 10 points and distributed three assists.

Carter Spear hauled down five rebounds and pocketed three steals for the Jaguars, Matt Heckman doled out a team-best five assists and Isaac Johnson dished out four assists.

The Jaguars made 14 of 30 shots from 2-point range, 4 of 13 behind the 3-point line and 17 of 33 at the free throw line.

Luke Mueller netted 18 points — including four 3-pointers — to top Cleveland, which made 10 of 12 free throws on the game.

Truman/Martin Luther/GHEC (7-4, 2-0 Valley) plays host to Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton on Thursday night in Northrop.
