Luverne boys hockey chills Fairmont Area, 12-2
FAIRMONT — Four goals from Gaige Nath and a six-goal first period propelled Luverne.
The Luverne Cardinals soared by the Fairmont Cardinals 12-2 in a Big South Conference boys hockey clash at Martin County Arena on Tuesday night.
Luverne’s Mark Sterrett opened the game’s scoring with a goal at the 10:15 point of the first period off a double assist from Ben Serie –the first of four on the day and three in the first period — and Carlton Oftedahl.
Nath scored his first goal with 8:12 left in the opening segement off a double assist from Serie and Marshall Dammann.
Joesef Olson scored the first of Fairmont Area’s goals unassisted when he collected a loose puck in front of the net and wristed it into the upper-right corner of the webbing with 6:48 left in the first period.
Serie scored the next goal for Luverne with 4:29 left in the opening segment off a double assist from Dammann and Mark Sterrett.
Colby Crabtree scored for the visiting Cardinals with 3:17 left off a Mason Steensma assist, Serie scored his second with 2:15 remaining off a double assist from Austin Watts-Boll and Cooper Arends, and Nath scored the final goal of the opening period off a double assist from Sterrett and Serie with 1:57 remaining.
Nath scored to open the second period with 11:08 left off an assist from Sterrett — giving Sterrett a playmaker.
Mason Steensma scored for the visiting Cardinals with help from Tyler Roberts and Crabtree at the 10:09 juncture, Nath scored his fourth goal off a double assist from Serie and Arends with 7:42 left in the middle segment and Sterrett scored with a helper from Nath at the 5:36 juncture of the middle segment.
Evan Carlson scored unassisted for Fairmont Area as the buzzer sounded to end the second period.
With a running clock in the final segment, Skylar Dingmann scored for the visiting Cardinals off a double assist from Roberts and Steensma with 12:31 remaining and James Chanthalangsy scored unassisted with 6:47 left in the matchup.
Fairmont Area head coach Kris Olson said his team needs to do a better job getting shots on goal and making it harder for opponents to get shots on goal.
Luverne outshot Fairmont Area 56-17 in the matchup.
Dakotah Hoefker made 13 saves for the home Cardinals and Tyson Geerdes made 30.
Fairmont Area (0-12, 0-8 Big South) plays at Worthington at 7 p.m. Thursday night.
Luverne (5-8, 5-3 Big South) plays Saturday at Willmar at 3:30 p.m. in a nonconference contest.
