Windom Area hockey teams sweep Fairmont Area

WINDOM — The Eagles soared by the Cardinals.

Windom Area beat Fairmont Area 4-1 in Big South Conference girls hockey action Thursday night in Windom.

Anna Volk opened the game’s scoring in the first period. Volk scored with 11:31 left in the opening segment off an assist from Ellyson Bang.

The Eagles followed Volk’s goal with another in the first period, this time from Bang. Bang scored off an assist from Marissa Becker with 6:46 left in the opening segment.

Fairmont Area answered with 2:09 remaining in the middle segment. Macy Militello scored off a double assist from Mackenzie Householder and Joni Becker, but Militello’s goal was all the Cardinals would muster in the matchup.

Abby Ignaszewski put Windom Area’s lead back to two with a goal off an assist from Madelyn Schumacher with 1:10 left in the middle segement.

Miranda Cory scored unassisted for Windom Area with 7:05 left in the final segment to create the final score of 4-1.

Windom Area outshot Fairmont Area 25-13 in the matchup.

Hadley Artz made 21 saves between the pipes for the Cardinals.

Fairmont Area (3-12, 3-5 Big South) hosts Luverne at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Martin County Arena.

Windom Area (3-11, 2-6 Big South) hosts Rochester Century at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Boys Hockey

Windom Area 12, Fairmont Area 0 — The Eagles used a seven-goal second period to shut down the Cardinals on Thursday night.

Kyle Espenson scored the first of two Eagle first-period goals off an assist from Alex Espenson with 8:34 left in the opening period. Mikal Anderson scored off a Wyatt Haugen assist with 4:45 remaining for the Eagles’ second goal of the game.

Kyle Espenson scored twice in the second period to make a hat trick.

Anderson scored a short-handed goal off a double assist from Tanner Pigman and Austin Fredin with 15:57 showing on the second-period scoreboard. Fredin followed with a goal six minutes later off an assist from Anderson.

With 8:02 left in the middle segment, Vincent Vongsy scored off a Caleb Rivera assist and Kyle Espenson scored his second of the game with 6:45 left in the middle segment off a double assist from Alex Espenson and Fredin.

Haugen scored with 2:01 left in the second period off an assist from Fredin — which gave Fredin a playmaker — and Kyle Espenson collected his hat trick with 40 seconds remaining in the segment off an assist from Chad Poltz.

Keaton Storm scored the final second-period goal with 10 seconds left off an assist from Caleb Rivera.

Pigman opened third-period scoring with 12:10 left in the game on an Anderson assist.

Kyle Espenson scored his fourth goal off a double assist from Poltz and Fredin with 4:15 left in the matchup and Rivera scored with 1:20 left off an assist from Alex Espenson to cap the offensive production.

Dakotah Hoefker made 45 saves in goal for the Cardinals.

Fairmont Area (0-10, 0-6 Big South) travels to Redwood Falls on Saturday for a 1 p.m. Big South Conference game against Redwood Valley.

Windom Area (3-4-1, 3-3 Big South) plays again tonight against Kasson-Mantorville at Dodge County Ive Arena at 7 p.m.
