Storm hockey teams sweep Cardinals

BENSON — Fairmont Area’s Mackenzie Householder and Joni Becker netted back-to-back third-period goals, but the Cardinals hockey team could not overcome the Morris/Benson Area Storm’s 4-1 lead through two periods on Saturday.

Taryn Picht produced a hat trick, while Kortney Sanasack scored one goal and distributed two assists to power the Storm to a 5-3 non-league victory over the Cardinals.

Picht converted Chloe Zimmel’s helper into the game’s initial goal 4:39 into the opening frame before Kellie Wilts cashed in a Sanasack pass at the 6:09 juncture.

Householder netted the first of her two goals on the game by connecting for an unassisted score just 1 minute into the second segment. Picht, however, produced back-to-back goals to close out the period with MBA up 4-1. Picht’s second goal of the game came 2:20 into the frame before she converted Sanasack’s assist into her third goal at the 14:40 mark.

Householder tallied another unassisted goal 8:24 into the third before Becker transformed a double assist from Brooklyn Meyer and Alexis Newville into a net-finding shot to trim the Cardinals’ deficit to 4-3 at the 10:20 juncture.

Sanasack, however, cashed in Andrea Walz’s pass for an insurance goal for the Storm at 12:30.

MBA goalie Leah Thompson stopped 19 shots to net the win. Fairmont netminder Rachel O’Connor made 22 saves on the game.

Fairmont Area (2-7) plays host to Worthington at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Boys Hockey

Morris/Benson Area 3, Fairmont Area 0 — Reece Kuseke collected a pair of goals, while netminder Chase Engebretson made 19 saves to pace the Storm’s shutout over the Cardinals on Saturday in Benson.

Engebretson and Fairmont Area goalie Tyson Geerdes stonewalled their opposing offenses for two scoreless periods before Kuseke reached the scoring column 8:34 into the third period.

Kuseke converted Parker Klemm’s assist into a 1-0 lead before he followed with an unassisted goal at 14:25. Kolby Goff cashed in Brady Goff’s assist for the final MBA goal.

Geerdes finished with 24 saves for the Cardinals (0-6), who travel to Worthington on Tuesday night.
