Luverne hockey ices Fairmont Area
LUVERNE — Forward Kamryn VanBatavia generated a game-best five points on the strength of two goals and three assists to power the Luverne Cardinals past the Fairmont Area Cardinals, 7-1, during Big South Conference hockey action Tuesday night.
Rozilyn Oye triggered Luverne’s 50 shots-on-goal barrage by converting Shelby Kracht’s assist into a 1-0 lead with 9:27 remaining in the opening period at Blue Mound Ice Arena in Luverne.
VanBatavia, an eighth-grader, then doubled Luverne’s lead by assisting on Rylee Gee’s power-play goal with 3:15 left in the first frame.
Freshman Mackenzie Householder then answered for Fairmont Area with a power-play goal just 21 seconds into the second period. Householder’s unassisted goal trimmed the visiting Cardinals’ gap to 2-1 before VanBatavia re-established a two-goal advantage for Luverne.
VanBatavia cashed in junior forward Claire Baustian’s assist for a goal before Baustian followed with back-to-back goals to extend Luverne’s lead to 5-1 after two periods completed.
VanBatavia assisted Reghan Bork’s goal to account for Luverne’s late third-period score before VanBatavia cashed in a double-assist from Gee and Bork with only 2:46 remaining in regulation.
Eighth-grade goaltender Hadley Artz recorded an incredible 43 saves between the pipes for Fairmont Area, who tallied 13 shots on goal.
Fairmont Area (1-3) squares off against the St. Paul Blades at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Paul West.
Luverne (4-1-1) travels to Windom Area on Thursday night for a 7 p.m. game.
