Cardinal tennis serves 7-0 BSC loss to Trojans

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Cardinals swept the Worthington Trojans in an impressive meet on senior and parents night at the Cardinal Courts on Friday.

The Cardinals won 7-0 in the rescheduled meet from Sept. 9 and didn’t need a third set in any match to get through the Trojans, though there were more lineup changes coming for the Cardinals on Friday.

Because the Cardinals (6-6) go to Mankato West for a quadrangular today against Blue Earth Area, Mankato East and Mankato West, head coach Eric Johnson decided to give usual No. 1 singles player Claire Nemmers a rest day, moving the rest of the singles lineup up a spot.

“Claire’s been struggling, she maybe could have played, but we decided it was best with a lot of matches coming up soon to rest her,” Johnson said. “It’s hard to keep her off the court. I thought everyone stepped up really well.”

Fairmont’s first doubles tandem of Brittany Bass and Lauren Green breezed by Worthington’s Cindy Hernandez and Perla Rodriguez for a 6-0, 6-1 victory that took about 45 minutes to complete.

“In first and second doubles, we were really talking about maintaining our focus through the whole match without having any dips,” Johnson said. “I felt like we did that. We really hit our spots well and we weren’t accepting ridiculously safe type shots.”

Maggy Totzke moved up to second singles to face Worthington’s Cynthia Salksavath and won 6-1, 6-0, winning Fairmont its second team point.

“Maggy played really well,” Johnson said. “She’s becoming a good defensive counter-puncher and she’s able to switch to offense just like that. It’s really fun to watch her develop.”

Eighth-grader Shannon Green moved up to the varsity fourth singles position with Nemmers out and beat Worthington’s Jasmine Riley 6-2, 6-2. Riley went up 1-0 in both sets, but Shannon Green came back to take four straight games to win the first set and five straight in the second set to give Fairmont a commanding 3-0 team lead.

“Shannon stepped up really well,” Johnson said. “She was very receptive to coaching out there. She was making the adjustments that sometimes young players don’t always make.”

Fairmont’s second doubles combo of Bergen Senf and Lauren Davis beat Worthington’s Marah Prudy and Neveah Schreiber, 6-0, 6-0, to clinch the Fairmont team victory.

Briana Joseph moved to third singles for Fairmont and beat Madison Johnson 6-2, 6-0.

“It’s nice to get Briana a couple singles matches here,” Johnson said. “She played really well.”

Sydney Hainy took over at first singles, beating Worthington’s Maggie Putnam 6-1, 6-3. Hainy jumped ahead 4-1 in the second set, but Putnam won back-to-back games to move to 4-3. After Hainy won the next game, three straight extended rallies ended in points for Hainy to win the match.

“Sydney had a really nice grind match,” Johnson said. “That girl really hit the ball back well and that’s what we needed.”

Fairmont’s third doubles team of Libby Totzke and Natalie Abel finished the team sweep when they beat Worthington’s Taya Oberloh and Ivy Jensen, 6-2, 6-4.

“I was really happy with third doubles,” Johnson said. “Their third doubles team was pretty decent, they could really move and they were good athletes. We had to get after it and that was good.”

Johnson said he was happy with his team’s performance overall and he thinks the players are growing and becoming veteran players.

“It was pretty similar to (Thursday),” Johnson said. “When we struggled, we didn’t let it become three or four game spirals. We lost a game or two and we would come do switches and changeovers and the girls were really receptive to changing tactics and changing mental approaches. Sometimes in tennis you miss a couple and it gets in your head. Even though they’re really young, they’re starting to be a little more of a veteran team. They aren’t a veteran team yet, but they’re getting there.”
