Becker playing for Dust Devils
NORTHROP — Former Fairmont High School standout Luke Becker has produced a .400 on-base percentage during his first two games with the Tri-City Dust Devils.
The San Diego Padres’ ninth-round draft choice out of the University of Kentucky has collected two hits, including a double, and drawn two walks in eight at-bats to generate one RBI.
Becker and the Dust Devils play in the Class A-Short Season Northwest League at Gesa Stadium in Pasco, Wash.
FHS track earns academic award
FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Cardinal girls and boys track & field programs earned Team Gold Awards for their academic excellence this spring.
The Cardinals’ girls team GPA was 3.80, while the Fairmont boys squad netted a 3.79.
Kellen Rodriguez, Conner Tordsen, Hayden Berhow, Emma Koehler, Lizzy Subbert, Iliana Ramon, Grace Higgins and Joni Becker all earned academic all-state individual accolades. All eight Fairmont student-athletes had a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.60 and were either a state meet qualifier or on the state honor roll for one more more events.
Area 5 named to all-BSC baseball
FAIRMONT — Three Fairmont and two Blue Earth Area baseball players merited selection to the all-Big South Conference’s Big Division postseason teams.
Senior pitcher/infielder Sam Schwieger, senior centerfielder Nate Kallenbach and junior infielder Nick Eversman earned first-team all-league honors for the Cardinals, while senior infielder Bobby Lindsey garnered the Bucs’ lone all-conference first-team spot.
Blue Earth Area junior catcher Karson Legred captured honorable mention status for his efforts this season.
Six merit all-BSC softball honors
FAIRMONT — Four Fairmont Cardinals and two Blue Earth Area Bucs captured spots on the all-Big South Conference’s Big Division softball teams for 2018.
Senior outfielder Ericka Kim, senior first baseman Mallory Gochanour and junior pitcher Jordan Ehlert earned first-team all-league honors for the Cardinals, while junior catcher Adri Granillo merited the award for the Bucs.
Fairmont senior shortstop Courtney Williams and Blue Earth Area sophomore pitcher Lauren Madetzke pocketed honorable mention accolades this spring.
