Marshall baseball slides by Fairmont, 5-2

MARSHALL — Isaac Schmidt produced two RBIs on two hits and pitched the seventh inning to notch the save as the Marshall Tigers scratched out a 5-2 Big South Conference baseball victory over the Fairmont Cardinals on Friday night.

Schmidt doubled and singled to plate a pair of Tiger runs offensively, while pitching a scoreless and hitless inning of relief to preserve the three-run triumph.

Marshall starting pitcher Kaleb Welvaert allowed two runs on six hits in six innings of work to pocket the victory.

Sam Schwieger and Lance Becker each produced RBI singles for Fairmont, while Nate Kallenbach, Collin Steuber, Nick Segar and Daniel Reiter delivered one hit apiece.

The Cardinals’ defense committed five errors on the game.

Becker started on the mound, giving up three earned run on six hits, struck out two and issued only one walk in three innings to take the loss.

Nick Eversman gave up three runs — none earned — on two hits, struck out one and did not allowed a walk in three innings of relief for the Cardinals.

Fairmont (6-5) hits the road to St. Peter today for a 1 p.m. conference contest.

Marshall bested Fairmont, 7-1, during B-squad action Friday in Marshall.

Tyson Geerdes doubled, while Jake Johnson and Blake Buntjer each singled for the Cardinals.

Jack Hested allowed five runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out two in 4 2/3 innings pitched to take the loss for Fairmont.

Zach Soelter gave up two runs on no hits in 1 1/3 innings of relief for the Cardinals.

Marshall made it a clean sweep by down Fairmont, 9-0, during C-squad action Friday in Marshall.

Jordan Militello collected two hits to top the Cardinals’ offense.

Jackson Utermarck allowed five earned runs on seven hits, fanned four and walked two in four frames pitched for Fairmont.

Gavin Rodning struck out two and issued one walk in one inning of relief for the Cardinals.
