Mavericks trample Knights in softball twinbill

GLENVILLE — The Martin County West Mavericks softball team opened the season with a doubleheader sweep of the Glenville-Emmons/Alden-Conger Knights on Thursday.

The Mavericks trampled the Knights, 19-1, in the first game and 18-2 in the second contest, with both outings lasting only four innings apiece.

MCW starting pitcher Jordan Stahl gave up one run on five hits and struck out six batters in the four-inning, 18-run Game 1 win.

Dani Nelson homered twice and collected three RBIs to pace the Mavericks’ offensive outburst. Stahl and Sydney Hein each finished with three hits and four RBIs, while Alyssa Williamson, who had two RBIs, and Mercedes Moeller combined equally for six hits.

Erin Tlam produced two doubles and batted in a run for MCW, while teammate Karlee Thiesse, who generated a pair of hits, and Hannah Olson, who tripled, each collected an RBI.

Erika Bute absorbed the loss for the Knights, walking one batter in going the distance.

In the second game, Thiesse hit a home run and finished with two hits and three RBI in the four-inning contest. Williamson and Stahl each collected two RBIs with two and three hits, respectively.

Moeller, Tlam and Hein all finished with two hits and two RBIs, while Olson doubled and collected two RBIs.

Williamson pitched the four innings and gave up two runs on one hit, while walking four.

Knights’ starting pitcher Kennedy Severtson walked eight and struck out one in going the distance to absorb the loss.

Martin County West (2-0, 1-0 Valley) plays host to the Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley East Chain/Truman Jaguars and Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s in a split doubleheader today in Welcome. The Mavericks face the Jaguars at 4 p.m. before playing the Knights.

New Ulm 11, Fairmont 0 — Junior ace hurler Ashlyn Donner fired a no-hitter to power the Eagles to a season-opening, five-inning, Big South Conference victory over the Cardinals on Thursday in New Ulm.

Donner recorded 12 strikeouts — including fanning the side in the third, fourth and fifth innings — in five frames of work to earn the complete-game win. Donner issued walks to the Cardinals’ Courtney Williams and Ericka Kim.

Joey Batt went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and collected one RBI to top New Ulm’s offensive performance.

Kaila Brudelie added a 1-for-2 offensive effort with a game-best three RBIs and crossed the plate twice for the Eagles.

Fairmont ace hurler Jordan Ehlert allowed only four earned runs on six hits, struck out four and issued just one walk in going the distance inside the pitching circle.

Fairmont (1-1, 1-1 BSC) plays host to Worthington today in a 4:30 p.m. conference doubleheader at Cardinal Park in Fairmont.

New Ulm (1-0) plays host to Blue Earth Area today in a 4:30 p.m. league doubleheader at Harman Park in New Ulm.

New Ulm rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to squeeze past Fairmont, 7-6, during junior varsity action Thursday in New Ulm.

Sydney Hainy collected one hit and two RBIs to pace the Cardinals’ offensive effort, while Hailey Meyers produced one hit and one RBI. Allie Schwieger chipped in a hit.

Kaitlyn Freese allowed one earned run on eight hits, struck out seven and walked one in 6 2/3 innings for Fairmont.
