MCA’s Segar gains state; Magic 4th at sectional

LUVERNE — Martin County Area freshman gymnast Sabrina Segar earned a Class A state bid on the floor exercise during Saturday’s Section 3 Meet in Luverne.

Segar garnered a fourth-place mark of 9.3 on the judges’ scorecards to merit a trip to the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion, with action starting at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Segar also topped the Magic by producing an all-around total of 34.35 points to pace a fourth-place team showing of 133.625.

Worthington defended its section crown by outscoring runner-up Jackson County Central, 143.1-141.65, while Hendricks/Russell-Tyler-Ruthton finished third at 134.925.

“Sabrina earned her score during the floor’s first (team) rotation, and it held up for the duration of the meet,” said Martin County Area mentor LeeAnn Steen. “That’s an impressive accomplishment.”

Magic senior Brielle Meade nearly joined Segar in the Twin Cities by generating a score of 9.05 on the balance beam to net a tie for the final individual state-qualifying spot on the piece of equipment.

Unfortunately for Meade, Marshall’s Saphi McFarquhar netted the third and final state bid on the beam via the judges’ tiebreaking criteria.

The new state-qualifying includes advancing the section’s top three all-arounders instead of two, and then the top three ‘non-top three all-arounders’ on each apparatus.

JCC’s Brooklyn Schuett generated a total of 36.15 to edge teammate Abby Schneekloth and Worthington’s Taylor Eggers — who each tallied 35.875s — for first-place all-around honors.

Brooklyn Schuett also struck gold on the floor (9.5), Eggers won the vault (9.35), Hendricks/RTR’s Greta Johnson topped the unevens (8.75), while Worthington’s Maria Contreras won the balance beam (9.425).
