Fairmont Area hockey falls to New Ulm, Waseca

WASECA — Jayden Pederson netted a hat trick to accumulate four points to help power the Waseca Bluejays to a 7-3 Big South Conference girls hockey win over the Fairmont Area Cardinals on Tuesday night in Waseca.

Pederson scored once in the first period and added two more goals and an assist during the second period to close out the Bluejays’ scoring.

Riley Brown assisted on both of Pederson’s second-period goals while also scoring in each of the first and second periods.

Whitnie Norton and Hailie Tegmeier finished with one goal apiece for the Bluejays, which totaled 33 shots on goal. Haley Holtz and Clare Miller both dished out an assist.

Joni Becker netted the Cardinals’ first goal in the second period, while Mackenzie Householder scored a goal in both the second and third periods. The Cardinals attempted 22 shots on goal.

Goaltender Rachel O’Connor made 26 saves for the Cardinals.

Fairmont Area (2-22) travels to Windom Area on Monday night for its regular-season finale.

Boys Hockey

New Ulm 6, Fairmont Area 0 — The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 first-period lead and never looked back in the Big South Conference shutout victory over the Cardinals on Tuesday night in New Ulm.

Landon Strong scored two of his three goals in the period en route to a hat trick. Ryan Esser and Jack Fairbairn also netted goals in the frame.

Strong scored his final goal in the second period, while Colton Braulick produced the Eagles’ final goal in the third period. Braulick also finished the game with an assist.

Glavine Schugel exited the ice with three assists and Josh Seidl had one for New Ulm.

Colby Kuhl made 51 saves for Fairmont Area, which totaled eight shots on goal.

Fairmont Area (2-20) plays host to Redwood Valley at 7 p.m. Friday in Fairmont.
