Red Bull wrestlers trample St. Peter, 62-9
FAIRMONT — The Class 2A No. 12-ranked Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls nearly earned a rare shutout during their Big South Conference wrestling dual meet against the St. Peter Saints on Thursday night.
No. 8-ranked 120-pounder Connor Simmonds, 126-pounder Cale Steuber and 220-pounder Conner Tordsen each produced pins to highlight the Red Bulls’ 62-9 stampede over the Saints at Cardinal Gym in Fairmont.
“It’s good to get our guys back on the mat and wrestling again,” Red Bulls head coach Adam Williamson said in reference to his lineup’s six-day respite. “I thought we did a nice job of earning a lot of bonus points tonight.”
Lucas Jagodzinske and No. 3-ranked 113-pounder Jaxson Rohman did exactly that from the first top weight classes in Fairmont/MCW’s lineup to build a quick 8-0 lead on the team ledger.
Jagodzinske built a 7-1 lead after his 106-pound match’s opening 2-minute segment before exchanging an escape for a takedown with Hunter McCann. Jagodzinske then tallied a third-period reversal to seal his 11-2 major decision.
Rohman assembled a textbook clinic en route to a 12-5 first-frame lead over Noah Hunt before coasting to an eventual 20-9 major decision to widen the Red Bulls’ lead.
Connor Simmonds needed only 1:38 to press Kole Guth’s shoulders to the mat during 120-pound action before Cale Steuber lowered that pin time by disposing of Nathan Fogel in just 1:06 at 126 to extend the home team’s lead to 20-0.
No. 10-ranked 126-pounder Jordan Wolter moved to the 132-pound division and added three team tallies via a 9-4 decision over Michael Connor before Red Bulls’ teammate Zac Ringnell received a forfeit at 138 for six more points and a 29-0 edge. Ringnell holds the No. 9 spot in the Class 2A 132-pound state rankings.
Top-ranked 138-pounder Payton Anderson moved to the 145-pound class and did not need the third period in his quest for a technical fall. Anderson amassed a 7-1 first-period advantage before reeling off 11 unanswered points in the second segment en route to an 18-1 rout over Aaron Hunt.
Miles Fitzgerald kept the points rolling on the home team’s side of the scoreboard by generating a 19-3 technical fall over Hayden Kurth during 152-pound action. Fitzgerald held a 4-1 first-period lead before erupting for seven second-segment points and eight more in the third.
Sage Loredo-Hollon then outdueled Nathan Simmonds in 160-pound action by a 6-2 decision to earn St. Peter’s first team points of the dual meet.
No. 2-ranked 170-pounder Collin Steuber and 182-pounder Parker Anderson then received back-to-back forfeits for the Red Bulls before teammate Tristan Lange coasted to a 17-1 technical fall at 195. Lange piled up near-fall points en route to a 14-0 second-period margin over Jaden Neubauer before ending the match via the 15-point rule.
Conner Tordsen needed only 1:19 to earn the slap of the canvas over Hayden Thole during 220-pound action to cap the Red Bulls’ point production on the night.
No. 4-ranked heavyweight Anthony Putz claimed the Saints’ final team points of the dual meet by receiving a forfeit in the 285-pound division.
Fairmont/Martin County West (7-0) and St. Peter (2-4) compete in the Big South Conference Meet at 10 a.m. Saturday in Waseca.
