Redwood Valley ekes out OT win over Fairmont Area

REDWOOD FALLS — Axel Perrson converted Will O’Halloran’s assist into the game-winning goal 2:02 into overtime to propel the Redwood Valley Cardinals to a 4-3 victory over the Fairmont Area Cardinals during Saturday’s Big South Conference hockey clash.

Fairmont Area goaltender Colby Kuhl produced a game-best 45 saves to keep the visiting Cardinals in contention for a win despite Redwood Valley’s 49-19 shots-on-goal advantage on the game.

Jed Hansen accounted for the league contest’s initial goal by converting a double-assist from TJ Crews and Matthew Muetzel into a power-play goal with only 1:06 remaining in the opening segment.

Crews then traded roles to open the second, cashing in a double-assist from Perrson and Muetzel just 1:31 into the period to double Redwood Valley’s lead to 2-0.

Thomas Havnen, however, answered for Fairmont Area by producing the first of his team-best two-goal performance on the day. Havnen whittled the home team’s lead to 2-1 with an unassisted tally 5:01 into the second frame.

Hansen extended Redwood Valley’s lead to 3-1 with just 12 seconds remaining in the second period, converting a double-assist from Luke Ryan and Perrson into his second goal of the contest.

Havnen, however, was not to be denied as the Fairmont Area senior wing cashed in a power-play opportunity with a goal 3:10 into the third segment. Goalie Colby Kuhl triggered an outlet pass to Tony Nuss, who fed Havnen for the net-finding shot.

Tanner DeWar then delivered a clutch unassisted power-play goal 7:10 into the third period to draw Fairmont Area even on the scoreboard at 3-all and eventually force an extra session.

Redwood Valley netminder Jack Hawton tallied 16 saves.

Fairmont Area (1-14) plays host to Luverne in Game 2 of a doubleheader on Tuesday night in Fairmont.
