Eveleth-Gilbert rolls to win over Fairmont Area in Cup clash

BLAINE — Brenna Ceglar produced six points, while teammates Anna Seitz and Anneka Lundgren tallied five apiece to power the Eveleth-Gilbert Golden Bears to a 12-1 victory over the Fairmont Area Cardinals during third-round Open National Division hockey action at the Schwan’s Cup on Saturday.

Lauren Day triggered the Golden Bears’ offensive outburst during the initial 30 seconds of action, converting Kada Ceglar’s assist into a goal for a quick 1-0 lead.

Brenna Ceglar, who distributed a game-best five assists, produced her lone goal of the contest, cashing in a double-assist from Lundgren and Seitz only 3:53 into the first frame.

Lundgren, who doled out three assists, then netted the first of her two goals on the clash by tallying an unassisted score 8:38 into the opening segment for a 3-0 Bears’ margin.

Kylie Barenzelli opened second-period play with a goal off a double-assist from Bekah Davidson and Sophia Flatley before Seitz reeled off three of the ensuing four Bears’ goals to build an 8-0 lead.

Seitz began her quest for a hat trick by converting Brenna Ceglar’s pass into a goal before Seitz dished one of her two assists to Day for a net-finding shot.

Seitz then recorded back-to-back goals off helpers from Brenna Ceglar and Lundgren. Sydney Richards added the sixth Bears’ second-period goal for a 9-0 margin before Fairmont Area spoiled the shutout.

Eighth-grade phenom Mackenzie Householder converted sophomore Joni Becker’s pass into the Cardinals’ only goal of the game with only 7 seconds remaining in the second period.

The Golden Bears added three more goals in the third frame to post a double-figure margin of victory.
