Cardinal hockey teams fall at holiday tournaments
MORRIS — Freshman forward Zach Bruns unleashed four goals, including a natural hat trick during the third period, and doled out one assist to power the Morris Benson Area Storm to a 6-2 victory over the Fairmont Area Cardinals during the third-place game of the Storm’s Holiday boys hockey invitational on Friday.
Ironically, Bruns assisted on the first of two Jack Riley goals to open the contest’s scoring at the 13:58 juncture of the second period.
Bruns and Jack Riley then exchanged roles as Riley and Kellen Erdahl combined on a double-assist to set up Bruns for his first goal of the outing.
Eighth-grade phenom Hudson Artz then sliced Fairmont Area’s deficit in half by tallying an unassisted goal with 7:02 remaining in the middle segment.
Erdahl opened the Storm’s four-goal third frame with a net-finding blast before Bruns reeled off three unanswered goals on the heels of Fairmont senior forward Thomas Havnen’s goal. Havnen lit the lamp by converting Jacob Mitchell’s assist into a score at the 12:56 mark of the third to trim the Cardinals’ gap to 3-2.
Jack Riley finished with two goals and three assists for the Storm, while Erdahl scored four points via one goal and three helpers.
Cardinal goaltender Colby Kuhl recorded 41 saves on the game.
Morris Benson Area outshot Fairmont Area by a 47-33 margin.
Fairmont Area (1-12) travels to Windom Area on Thursday, Jan. 4, for a 7:30 p.m. face-off.

Arrowhead 9, Fairmont Area 0 — Mary Kremer amassed a game-best five goals to complement one assist to power Arrowhead to a 9-0 second-round shutout over Fairmont Area on Friday in the open national division of the Schwan’s Cup.
Megan Walmer delivered a pair of goals for Arrowhead, Emma Serres chalked up one goal and two assists, Lindsey McLean chipped in a goal, while Trina Povich and Maggie Bejna doled out helpers.
Fairmont Area netminder Emily O’Connor stopped 17 of Arrowhead’s 26 shots on goal, while Arrowhead goalie Emma Tate earned the win by halting all six of the Cardinals’ shots.
Fairmont Area (1-13) faces Eveleth-Gilbert at 5:30 p.m. today in the third round of the Schwan’s Cup on Super Rink 3.
Luverne 9, Fairmont Area 1 (Thursday) — Rylee Gee and Anika Gust each collected two goals and one assist to steer Luverne to a 9-1 first-round win over Fairmont Area in Schwan’s Cup action.
Regan Feit and Reghan Bork contributed one goal and one assist to Luverne’s winning ways, while teammates Shelby Kracht, Claire Baustian and Paige Sandbulte supplied one goal each. Madi Dinger added one assist.
Eighth-grade phenom Mackenzie Householder delivered Fairmont Area’s only goal of the opening-round contest, converting freshman Tegan Roskop’s assist 8:56 into the second period. Luverne held a 6-0 lead at that juncture.
Fairmont Area goaltender Emily O’Connor stopped 10 of Luverne’s 19 shots on goal, while Luverne netminder Cheyenne Schutz garnered the win by turning away 35 of Fairmont Area’s 36 shots on net.
