Red Bulls net 1st on Day 1 of River Riot
REDWOOD FALLS — The Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls have eight wrestlers in the quarterfinals and sit in first place with 58 1/2 points after the first day of the River Riot Invitational on Friday.
“(We’re) in darn good position to make a run at it. Hopefully, we have a good Saturday,” Red Bulls head coach Adam Williamson said.
The team looks to improve upon its third-place finish from last season at the 33-team tournament. Lucas Jagodzkinske, Jaxson Rohman, Cale Steuber, Jordan Wolter, Payton Anderson, Miles Fitzgerald, Collin Steuber and Tristan Lange all compete in the quarterfinals, starting at 9 a.m. today in Redwood Falls.
Davis Sunken, Zach Buseman and Trevor Oppedal also made the quarterfinals for the Blue Earth Area Bucs, currently in 19th place with 27 points.
Wrestling at 106, Jagodzinske opened the tournament with a bye before taking a 4-0 decision over Carter Brandes of New Ulm. Jagodzinske faces off against Damon Schutz on Worthington today.
Rohman also received at bye at 113 and pinned Sartell-Saint Stephen’s Dutch Norby in 2:42. Rohman moves on to face Hsa Khee Lar from Marshall, currently second in the team standings with 57 points.
Sunken, also in the 113 weight class, posted a 13-9 decision on Dylan Schultz of Maple Grove and edged Alexandria Area’s Alex Lemm, 6-5. Sunken will wrestle New London-Spicer wrestler Blake Vagle in the quarters.
Cale Steuber opened the tournament with a bye and earned a 12-3 major decision win against Maple River’s 126-pounder Reise Hanson. The Red Bull moves on to wrestle Charlie Pickell of Mankato West today.
After his bye, Wolter’s 20-5 technical fall on Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther’s Gach Mar allowed him a quarterfinal match against Adam Fredrickson of Tri-City United at 132.
Red Bulls 138-pounder Payton Anderson pinned LeSueur-Henderson’s Will Medina and Minneapolis South’s Micah Reff in 1:28 and 1:10, respectively, for a spot in the quarters against Cole Ranweiler of New Ulm Area.
Fitzgerald went 2-0 at 145, beating Rocori’s Max Court, 6-1, and United South Central’s Micah Hamson, 13-1. Fitzgerald faces Alex Lange of Holdingfold in the quarterfinals today.
Buseman took a 7-5 decision over Tyler Kleindl of Alexandria Area before earning a 3:57 pin on Simon Koenigs of Mankato West in the 160-pound bracket. Buseman will wrestle Tanner Stark of New Ulm Area today in the quarterfinals.
Collin Steuber pinned Maple Grove wrestler Jacob Herbert in 2:35 and used 2:43 to get the slap of the canvas against Canby’s Kyler Nothem. The 170-pound Red Bulls faces Noah Langsjoen of Mankato West in the quarterfinals.
Lange had a bye in the first round and took a 9-5 decision against Redwood-River Valley grappler Adam Bommersbach to get a quarterfinal match against CJ Toedter of Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City in the 182-pound bracket.
Oppedal earned 3:48 and 48-second falls on ACGC’s Jonathon Behm and Marshall wrestler Cole Felcyn, respectively to nab a spot in the quarterfinals.
Oppedal will take on Jaden Podratz of Sibley East, which has 49 points for third place.
Red Bulls Connor Simmonds (120), Nathan Simmonds (152) and Conner Tordsen (220) as well as the Bucs’ Caleb Beeler (106), Koby Nagel (132), Jaxen Klinkner (145), Dominic Whitlow (182) and Jordan Huse (195) will compete in the wrestlebacks today.
Beeler rebounded from a 4-2 loss against Tracy-Milroy-Balaton-Westbrook-Walnut Grove’s Ayden Horner with a 6-3 victory against Coy Gunderson of Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg. Beeler will face AGCG’s Kelvin Andrade today.
AGCG’s Ramzee Molinaro dealt Connor Simmonds a 9-7 loss to open the tournament. The Red Bull came back and pinned the Bucs’ Cooper Ochsendorf in 1:50 to stay alive in the wrestlebacks bracket and competes against Minneapolis South’s Gideon Miso. Ochsendorf was pinned by St. Peter’s Kole Guth in 1:19 to fall into the wrestleback bracket.
Jacob Prunty of Worthington pinned Nagel in 2:40, but Nagel rebounded with an 11-8 decision against LSH’s Tommy Gupton. Nagel wrestles RRV’s Matthew Zeug in the next round of the wrestlebacks today.
Josh Block of Mankato West put Klinkner on his back in 53 seconds to knock him into the wrestleback bracket. Klinkner then beat NLS’s Nathan Thein, 8-6, and will face Wabasso-Red Rock Central’s Luke Wagner today.
Dustin Muller edged Nathan Simmonds, 4-3, before Nathan Simmonds took a 10-2 major decision win against United South Central’s Hunter Johnson to earn a wrestleback match against Brock Humbert of Rocori.
Whitlow fell to TMBWWG’s Jace Paplow, 17-4, to open tournament action. The Buc pinned RRV’s Adam Bommersbach in 2:24 and will wrestle Steve Miller of TCU today.
Sibley East’s Andrew Schauer beat Huse, 15-0, and Huse is set for a wrestleback match against TCU’s Sam Miller.
Tordsen opened the tournament with a 10-5 win against Jacob Neuberger of Worthington, but was dealt a 15-0 loss by RRV’s Kaleb Haase. Tordsen wrestles Dawson-Boyd’s Tanner Johnson today.
