Fairmont, B.E. Area hoopsters fall at BSC showcase
ST. PETER — Marshall junior center Matthew Onken tallied a game-leading 16 points to pace the Tigers’ balanced scoring attack en route to a 65-42 victory over the short-handed Fairmont Cardinals during Big South Conference showcase basketball action Saturday in St. Peter.
Senior forward Jake Hess contributed 14 points to Marshall’s winning ways, while sophomore guard Noah Puetz tacked on 12 more points.
Senior forward Wyatt Quiring connected on four 3-pointers to pace his team-leading 14 points for the Cardinals, while senior forward Brady Allen supplied six points, grabbed four rebounds and distributed four assists.
Sophomore guard Jack Hested chipped in five points for Fairmont, while the trio of junior forward Dustin Schultz, junior wing Nick Eversman and junior wing Garrett Myren added four points apiece.
The Cardinals made 16 of 41 field goals for 39 percent, including 5 of 20 behind the 3-points arc, and 5 of 8 free throws on the game.
The Tigers hit 31 of 58 shots from the floor for 53 percent, including 3 of 5 beyond the bonus line, to go with a rare 0-for-4 effort at the charity stripe.
Marshall, which led 33-24 at halftime, outscored Fairmont by a 32-18 margin in the second half.
Fairmont (3-1) plays host to Worthington at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night at Cardinal Gym.
Marshall (3-0) plays host to Jackson County Central at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday night.
Redwood Valley 77, Blue Earth Area 58 — Senior guard Mitch Irlbeck erupted for a game-best 24 points to ignite the Cardinals’ 19-point Big South Conference showcase win over the Bucs on Saturday in St. Peter.
Sophomore forward Grant Strukel scored a team-best 17 points for the Bucs, while freshman Cameron Anderson, sophomore wing Caelan Sanders and senior post player Jacob Vaske contributed nine points apiece.
Blue Earth Area (1-3) travels to Waseca on Friday, while Redwood Valley (1-1) hits the road to Windom on Thursday.
