No. 11 Red Bulls flatten Waseca wrestlers, 69-6
FAIRMONT — Fairmont/Martin County West 106-pound freshman Lucas Jagodzinske posted a 9-0 major decision from the leadoff spot in the lineup and triggered a Red Bulls’ scoring stampede on Thursday.
The Class AA No. 11-ranked Red Bulls reeled off 12 more victories, including five falls and four received forfeits, to pin a lopsided 69-6 loss on the Waseca Bluejays during a Big South Conference wrestling dual meet in Fairmont.
“Our guys continued to turn in solid wrestling performances again tonight,” said Red Bulls head coach Adam Williamson. “Waseca was missing a couple of their better wrestlers, including No. 1-ranked 120-pounder Justin Sampson, but I thought our wrestlers went out and got falls where we needed to, and earned a couple of bonus-point wins.”
Ahead 4-0 on the team ledger following Jagodzinske’s bonus-point decision, No. 2-ranked 113-pounder Jaxson Rohman needed a mere 1:39 to trample the Red Bulls to six more points via a fall over Luke Osweiler.
Fairmont/Martin County West’s Connor Simmonds replicated Rohman’s feat at 120, building an 8-0 lead over Dayton Deutsch before earning the slap of the canvas in 5:15. Simmonds currently holds the No. 7 spot at 106 in the Class AA poll.
Cale Steuber required only 40 seconds to earn the raising of his hand by the referee, downing Jon Howson during 126-pound action to widen the Red Bulls’ margin to 22-0.
Jordan Wolter, the No. 9-ranked grappler at 126, moved up to 132 and received a forfeit for six more points for the home team.
Top-ranked 138-pounder Payton Anderson appeared to have pinned his Waseca opponent William Norton on two separate occasions, but settled for a 16-0 technical fall to tack five team points onto the Fairmont/Martin County West total.
Zac Ringnell built a 6-3 lead over the Bluejays’ Blake Wendland during 145-pound first-period action before extending his margin to 9-4 after the completion of the second 2-minute segment.
Ringnell finalized a 12-5 decision over Wendland before Red Bull teammates Miles Fitzgerald (152) and Nathan Simmonds (160) received forfeits.
No. 10-ranked 182-pounder Tristan Lange dropped to 170 and quickly disposed of Daniel Kuhns in 1:01 for Fairmont/Martin County West before Red Bull teammate Parker Anderson netted a forfeit at 182.
Collin Steuber, who’s ranked No. 3 at 170, wasted no time in pinning Abdulaziz Mungani in 53 seconds at 195 before Conner Tordsen capped the Red Bulls’ point production at 220.
Tordsen generated a 4-2 first-period lead over Jacob Hertzog before clinging to a 6-4 margin after two frames. Hertzog reversed Tordsen to open the third before Tordsen countered with a match-winning reversal with 30 seconds left.
Heavyweight Levi Kuschel received a forfeit to account for Waseca’s only points of the dual meet.
The Red Bulls (2-0, 2-0 Big South) competes against Redwood River Valley, St. Clair/Mankato Loyola and Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther in a 5 p.m. quadrangular on Tuesday in St. Clair.
Waseca (2-1) participates in the Jackson County Central Invitational at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Jackson.
