No. 11 Red Bulls pin 61-12 loss on New Ulm
SHERBURN — The Class AA No. 11-ranked Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls piled up six consecutive falls to open their 61-12 Big South Conference wrestling dual-meet triumph over the New Ulm Eagles on Tuesday night in Sherburn.
Jordan Wolter, the Red Bulls’ No. 9-ranked 126-pounder in the Class AA state poll, reached the 100-win milestone by pinning Rebekah Hoppe in 1:30 during their 132-pound match.
No. 1-ranked 138-pounder Payton Anderson delivered the Red Bulls’ sixth fall in a row by pressing Cole Ranweiler’s shoulders to the canvas in 2:30 to widen the home team’s lead to 36-0.
Fairmont/Martin County West’s 145-pounder Miles Fitzgerald continued his impressive start to the campaign by recording a last-second takedown in the third period to upend New Ulm’s Sean Howk, who holds the No. 7 spot in the Class AA 132-pound rankings. Fitzgerald, who broke into the starting lineup, captured the Maher Invitational crown in Saturday’s season-opener.
Lucas Jagodzinske continued his winning ways to jumpstart the Red Bulls out of the starting gate. Jagodzinske pinned the Eagles’ Carter Brandes in 4:00 during 106-pound action.
Jaxson Rohman, who’s ranked No. 2 at 113 pounds, needed only 1:04 to press Jackson Bode’s shoulders to the mat for a fall before Red Bulls teammate Connor Simmonds stepped to the starting circle. Simmonds, who holds the No. 7 spot at 106 pounds, needed a mere 25 seconds to flatten Nick Syverson during 120-pound action.
Cale Steuber then followed the Red Bulls’ pinning pattern by disposing of Jacob Bertrang in 1:33 during 126-pound action to set up wins by Wolter, Payton Anderson and Fitzgerald.
Class AA No. 2-ranked 138-pounder Hunter Ranweiler moved to the 152 spot in the lineup and edged FHS/MCW’s Zac Ringnell by a 2-0 decision before New Ulm teammate Tanner Stark doubled the score on Nathan Simmonds, 10-5, during 160-pound action. Stark is ranked No. 4 at 152 pounds.
FHS/MCW’s No. 10-ranked 182-pounder Tristan Lange posted a 13-4 major decision over the Eagles’ Lane Miller at 170 pounds.
Red Bulls grapplers Parker Anderson (182), No. 3-ranked 170-pounder Collin Steuber (195) and Jacob Rahn (220) all received forfeits from New Ulm before Eagles’ heavyweight Colby Wenninger erased a deficit to Conner Tordsen by pinning the Red Bull in 3:22.
The Red Bulls (1-0) play host to conference rival Waseca at 6 p.m. Thursday night at Cardinal Gym in Fairmont.
