Tigers scratch Cardinals in home opener

ALBERT LEA — Forwards Josie Venem and Mia Fjelsta combined equally for four goals to lead the Albert Lea Tigers to a 6-2 home-opening win over the Fairmont Area Cardinals on Thursday.

Anna Nordquist struck first for the Cardinals, scoring an unassisted goal at the 15:14 mark of the opening period.

Maddy Carstens evened up the score three minutes later, but Macy Militello’s shorthanded goal allowed the Cardinals the 2-1 lead after one frame.

The Tigers shut out the Cardinals in the next two periods and gained the lead in the second period.

Venem swiped in her first goal at the 15-minute mark of the second period.

Fjelsta scored both of her goals in the period, using an assist from Carstens to put the Tigers up, 4-2.

Fjelsta scored a power-play goal seven minutes later with help from one of Rasmussen’s assists.

Rusmussen also provided Katie Steven with an assist with 12:34 to go in the middle period.

Venem added a final score in the third period for the four-goal victory for the Tigers, which recorded 57 shots on goal.

Emily O’Connor rejected a game-high 51 Tigers shots, while the Cardinals attempted 18 shots on goal.

Fairmont Area (0-1) plays at Mankato West on Saturday, while Albert Lea (1-2) travels to Waseca on Tuesday.
