Anderson earns Cardinals’ MVP

FAIRMONT — Matthew Anderson was named the Fairmont Area Cardinals soccer team’s MVP during a recent awards event.

Ben Hernes was tabbed most improved player, while Kaleb Hoye claimed the golden boot award.

Joseph Gerken received the golden guard award, Tyson Geerdes received the golden glove award, while Jacob Mitchell netted the Cardinal award.

12U girls skate to 5-1 triumph

FAIRMONT — The Cavers Realty Fairmont 12U girls hockey team posted a 5-1 victory over the Okoboji Blizzard on Sunday in Okoboji, Iowa.

Chantel Moeller erupted for a game-high four goals, while teammate Corene Moeller distributed three assists for Fairmont.

Hannah Goerndt supplied one goal, while Alex Martin and Keara Flanagan each distributed one assist.

Goalie Hadley Artz made 11 saves for Fairmont (3-1), which generated 23 shots on goal.

Area grapplers reach rankings

FAIRMONT — Thirteen area wrestlers and two teams earned spots in the Guillotine’s Class AA and A preseason rankings.

The Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls garnered the No. 11 position in the Class AA ratings, while Blue Earth Area pocketed the No. 8 spot in Class A.

Payton Anderson captured the No. 1 spot at 138 pounds in Class AA for the Red Bulls, while teammate Jaxson Rohman earned the No. 2 position at 113.

Red Bulls’ 170-pounder Collin Steuber claimed the No. 3 spot, while Connor Simmonds pocketed No. 7 at 106. Zac Ringnell netted No. 8 at 132, while teammates Jordan Wolter (126), Mario Maldonado (152), Miles Fitzgerald (145) and Tristan Lange (182) each received the No. 10 spot at their respective weights.

In Class A, BEA’s Wyatt Tungland merited the No. 4 spot at 182, Zach Buseman claimed No. 5 at 170, while Caden Ochsendorf collected the No. 10 spot at 138.

Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther heavyweight Derek Firchau also claimed the No. 10 spot in the Class A state rankings.
