Cardinals’ JV ends with win
BELLE PLAINE — The Fairmont Cardinals junior varsity football team closed out the season with a 20-6 win against the Belle Plaine Tigers on Monday night.
Alex Kotewa threw 27- and 45-yard touchdown passes to Tony Nuss, while teammate Zach Soelter added a 7-yard scoring run. The Cardinals also recorded a safety in the win.
Kotewa finished with 152 yards on 8-for-15 passing, while Nuss caught half of the passes for 90 yards.
Nick Thate had two quarterback sacks for the Cardinals. Kale Steuber finished with an interception.
Fairmont ended the season with a record of 6-0-1.
FHS football moves to 6th
FAIRMONT — Fairmont moved one spot higher in the Class 3A state football poll by landing at No. 6 on Tuesday.
Sectional rival Jackson County Central shared the No. 10 spot with Stewartville in 3A, while St. Croix Lutheran remained No. 1 this week.
Redwood Valley and Pipestone Area hold the Nos. 5 and 6 spots, respectively, in Class 2A, with Maple River landing at No. 8.
Caledonia maintained the top spot in the Class 2A state rankings.
Marshall continued to hold the No. 2 position in 4A, six points behind Winona.
Cleveland and Houston share the No. 5 spot in the 9-Man state poll this week.
Spring Grove still holds the top spot in the 9-Man rankings.
