New Ulm soccer blanks Fairmont Area, 3-0

FAIRMONT — Midfielder Brandon Ocampo put New Ulm’s offense into motion during Monday night’s conference soccer clash in Fairmont, and Eagles’ striker Wyatt Huard put points on the scoreboard.

Huard spoiled Fairmont Area netminder Malachi Anderson’s second-half shutout bid by tallying two goals and assisting on New Ulm’s third score to steer the Eagles to a 3-0 Big South Conference win over the Cardinals at Kot Soccer Complex.

“Who’s the game’s MVP tonight?” New Ulm head coach Dave Dake asked his team after the shutout.

The unanimous answer was Ocampo for his quarterbacking skills on the field as the sophomore playmaker was denied three first-half opportunities to score by the vastly-improved Anderson.

“Give Fairmont (Area) credit — they have improved a lot from the first time we played them this season,” Dake said in reference to the Eagles’ 6-0 victory over the Cardinals on Aug. 26 in New Ulm. “Their keeper (Anderson) did a nice job tonight. Overall, Fairmont’s defense played solidly and kept our attackers from finding seams during the first half.”

Malachi Anderson recorded half of his 10 saves to match New Ulm netminder Matthew Janke’s scoreless performance between the pipes during the game’s initial 40 minutes.

Cardinal defenders Abram Sanchez and Joseph Gerken assisted Anderson’s smothering performance to maintain a scoreless tie by intermission.

Sanchez cleared away a 4-on-3 chance, triggered by New Ulm midfielder Andrew Dake’s corner kick — one of an incredible 13 on the game for the visitors, at the 22-minute juncture of the first half.

Gerken later swept the soccer ball away from a driving Dake along the left end line before Anderson displayed his mettle by gloving Dake’s left-wing laser at the 14:24 mark.

Huard, Ocampo and striker Jack Howard, however, kept the pressure on Fairmont’s defense during the second half and finally cracked the combination for a 1-0 lead.

Huard weaved through defenders to drill a right-to-left kick that eluded a diving Anderson at the 20:11 juncture.

Ocampo then settled a midfield overpass, launched a perfect lead pass to a breaking Huard, who accelerated down the left wing. Huard’s stop-and-pop blast from the right just snuck past a diving Anderson for a 2-0 lead with 11:25 remaining in regulation.

Huard then back-kicked a pass to a trailing Alex Gutzke with time winding down, and Gutzke hammered home an 18-yarder to close out the scoring with 3:41 to go.

Fairmont Area striker Thomas Havnen, however, nearly spoiled Janke’s shutout bid with a left-wing blast with 8:22 remaining. Havnen drove the left wing before drilling a liner, but Janke proved his sure hands with the catch to keep the Cardinals off of the scoreboard.
