Fairmont places 1st, 3rd at own invite

FAIRMONT — Laura Thompson trodded the muddy course and broke 20 minutes to lead the Class A, No. 1-ranked Fairmont Cardinals girls cross country team to win the Cardinal Invite on Monday at Cedar Creeek Park in Fairmont.

“The course was wet and muddy, and that slowed them down a little bit, but it was a lot better than I thought it was going to be at 3:30 p.m.,” Cardinals head coach Bob Bonk laughed. “I thought Laura ran especially well to break 20 minutes. Sub-20 is a pretty big barrier.”

The eighth-grade Thompson produced a second-best overall 5K time of 19 minutes, 53.1 seconds for the Cardinals’ point total of 30.

Albert Lea Tiger Autumn Muilenburg won the race in 19:37.9 for the team’s runnerup finish with 64 points.

Minnesota Valley Lutheran (65) and United South Central/Alden-Conger (69) placed third and fourth.

Iliana Ramon and Sarah Krumholz went 3-4 with times of 20:12 and 20:31.6, respectively, for the Cardinals. Emma Koehler rounded out the overall top 10, finishing in 22:27.8.

Hannah Neusch contributed the Cardinals’ final counting time, pacing a 22:32.3 race for 11th place.

“I thought our girls did a nice job,” Bonk said. “We need to continue to get the girls who aren’t in the top three closer to the front.

“We’re working hard on that. I know the girls are giving it their best and that’s what we need to do going forward to continue to improve.”

Andrew Moeller served as the Cardinals boys team’s driving force, finishing third with a time of 17:39.8. The team also placed third with 68 points behind the winning Mankato West Scarlets (28) and runnerup Albert Lea Tigers (36).

Tiger speedster Vidal Moreno won the race, breaking the tape in 17:04.9 with Scarlet runner Kellen Brudwick getting the runnerup finish (17:10.8).

Nathan Willett engineered the Cardinals’ second counting time, posting a 18:10.4 for 13th place in Monday’s invite.

“That was good. He’s missed a little training and we look for him to get under 18 real soon,” Bonk said. “It was a solid run.”

Dayton Pasch placed 18th for a 5K race of 18:39.7, followed by William Saari’s 18:41.3 for a 19th-place showing.

“I thought that Dayton Pasch and Will Saari had really good races to be our third and fourth runners,” Bonk said.

Cardinal Connor Artner ran to 23rd place with a time of 19:05.7.

“I kind of felt we could be a little closer to the top two than we were,” Bonk said about his team.” Hopefully, we’ll have a lot of positive emotion going up to Milaca on Saturday and see what we can do up there.”

Fairmont competes in the Milaca Mega Meet at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Milaca Golf Course.
