Waseca tennis edges Fairmont in 4-3 clash
WASECA — The Waseca Bluejays edged the Fairmont Cardinals, 4-3, during a Big South Conference girls tennis dual meet on Tuesday in Waseca.
Tied at three matches apiece, the Bluejays’ No. 3 doubles tandem of Tessa Volkmer and CeCe Huttemier outlasted Holly Petrowiak and Lauren Davis, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5, to close out the home team’s one-point margin of victory.
Tanika Johnson and Jacklynn Jevning added another doubles win for the Bluejays, beating Makena Rodriguez and Emily O’Connor in a hard-hitting showdown, 6-4, 7-5, at the second spot.
Fairmont’s Brittany Bass and Lauren Green prevented the doubles-bracket sweep, beating Bluejay netters Hannah Berndt and Rayna Baumgarn, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 1 spot in the lineup.
Fairmont’s No. 2 singles player Claire Nemmers won her second match of the week, defeating Alexis Baumgarn, 6-0, 6-3.
Maggy Totzke chipped in a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Morgan Bruhn at fourth singles for the Cardinals.
Taylor Pfeifer and Emily Hildebrandt won their matches at first and third singles, respectively, for the Bluejays.
Pfeifer beat Sydney Hainy, 6-1, 6-0, while Hildebrandt posted a 6-0, 6-0 win against Briana Joseph.
Fairmont (2-10) travels to New Ulm on Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. conference dual meet against the Eagles.
Waseca (3-10, 1-1 Big South) travels to Schroeder Courts in Blue Earth on Thursday to face Blue Earth Area.

Blue Earth Area’s Macie Stevermer posted a 7-5, 6-4 win against Hanna Himmelman at first singles, while Bucs’ teammate Julia Hanson beat Briana Schmidt in consecutive 6-1 sets at the second position.
Bucs’ No. 3 singles player Arika Howard defeated Lauren Klein, 6-1, 6-1, while Tea Armstrong closed out singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Kelsie Domeier.
In doubles action, Blue Earth Area’s Malarie Scholtes and Carissa Engesser won at the No. 1 doubles spot, beating Courtney Sellner and Megan Himmelman, 6-2, 6-1.
McKenna Dutton teamed with Britt Howard for a 6-3, 6-3 win over River Valley’s No. 2 doubles netters Brooklyn Moldan and Kaydince Thomas.
Sydney Blagg and Cali Beyer beat Liu Nelson and Megan Stevens, 6-2, 6-3, at the third position in the lineup for the Bucs’ doubles sweep.
Blue Earth Area (10-2) plays host to Waseca at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Schroeder Courts in Blue Earth.
