WBE legion baseball exits district tournament
BLUE EARTH — Winnebago American Legion Post 82/Blue Earth Post 89 head baseball coach Steve Sonnicksen could only describe Sunday’s game as “disappointing.”
After holding a 4-0 lead, Adrian Post 32 rallied in the seventh inning for a 5-4 victory over host WBE during Day 3 of the Division II, 2nd District consolation bracket on Sunday at Veterans Field.
“They (Adrian) started hitting the ball a little harder, and we just didn’t make the plays,” Sonnicksen said.
Winnebago/Blue Earth finished the season with a 10-10 record. Adrian will play either Wabasso or Jackson at 1 p.m. Friday at Veterans Field in Blue Earth.
Although Post 32 committed one error in the top of the seventh, the team kept WBE from scoring to start its comeback bid in the bottom of the seventh.
Mitchel Wagner started and ended Post 32’s inning, reaching on an error. Zack Loosbrock doubled to a hole in right field to get to on, but Alex Loosbrock popped out to shortstop Alan Davids. Posts 82 and 89 committed another error to get Brent Hokeness on base and Wagner home for Post 32’s first run of the contest.
Zack Hendel drove in courtesy runner Zack Bierman for a 4-2 deficit, and Jeffery Cauwels lined a pitch to left field to fill the bases. Landon Rogers singled to score Hokeness and Handel for the 4-4 tie. Nick Harder got a hit before Wagner came back around to get the walkoff RBI single as Hendel crossed home plate.
WBE generated all of its scoring in the first frame. Kaylan Legred led off with a single, then took another base when the ball got away from shortstop Zack Hendel. Alan Davids traded places with Legred with an RBI double and early score.
Zac Schonrock moved around a tag to safely reach first, and Hunter Bleess drew a one-out walk to load the bases.
Post 32 pitcher Nick Harder walked Karson Legred to score Davids, and courtesy runner Koby Nagel plated on an error. Bleess added a final run on a fielder’s choice.
Schonrock provided WBE with two hits, while giving up five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts, a walk and a hit batter over six-plus innings.
Luverne Post 123 knocked WBE into the consolation bracket with an 11-4 win on Saturday.
“They definitely had the big innings, I think some walks helped them,” Sonnicksen said about Luverne. “In the first inning, the defense had some holes. Otherwise, the rest of the game, we played error-free.”
Two Posts 82 and 89 errors helped Post 123 to three runs in the first inning. Derek Lundgren hit a double before Declan Beers sent a pitch to right field for two on.
Lundgren reached home on Jake Haugen’s RBI base hit, and Colby Crabtree, Beers’ courtesy runner, when Post 82 and 89 tried to pick off Haugen at second.
The throw went past second baseman Joe Schavey, and Haugen advanced another 90 feet. Haugen made the third run after reaching home plate safely on Ben Serie’s sacrifice fly.
Posts 82 and 89 pitcher Alan Davids used one of his six strikeouts against Chase Johnson to send Post 123’s defense on the field.
Posts 82 and 89 didn’t get its first run until the bottom of the third. Kaylan Legred led off the inning with a base hit. He stole to second base as Lundgren struck out Davids, then displayed his speed by making a mad dash for third. An errant throw to third gave Legred the time needed to score for a 3-1 game.
But Post 123 came right back with Lundgren driving in three runs on his base hit. Trey Roberts, Gaige Nath and Sterrett all had a hit and scored to increase Post 123’s lead to 6-1. Lundgren moved up to second when Posts 82 and 89 tried to get Sterrett out at home. Lundgren scored on Beers’ double.
Courtesy runner CJ Bonin scored on Joe Schavey’s single in the fifth inning as Posts 82 and 89 cut into their deficit. Schavey and Zac Schonrock, who doubled, narrowed Post 123’s lead more, getting home on Karson Legred’s base hit.
Post 123 put the game out of reach in the seventh inning as Crabtree, Haugen, Serie and Nath scored for an 11-4 game.
Davids allowed eight runs on 10 hits, struck out six and walked three in 6 2/3 innings to take the loss.
