North Union’s Oleson earns 2nd at state; team nets 6th

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — Back-to-back state silver medals.

North Union senior standout Parker Oleson captured runner-up individual honors for a second consecutive season on Saturday during the Iowa Class 1A state golf tournament in Marshalltown, Iowa.

Oleson, who held third place after Friday’s opening round and trailed eventual state champion Kaleb Hagge of Winfield-Mt. Union by three strokes, fired a second-round total of 37-35–72 to climb one peg on the final leaderboard.

Oleson, who also netted 11th place during the 2015 state meet, finished with an impressive two-day total of 71-72–143 — six shots off of Hagge’s winning pace of 68-69–137.

Oleson, who will play golf at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, next season, generated 12 pars to complement birdies on the par-4 11th hole and the par-3 16th hole at the American Legion Memorial Golf Course to close out his outstanding prep golf career.

Hagge, a junior, carded 14 pars and birdied the par-4 fith hole and the par-3 13th hole to close with a 1-under par 35-34–69 in guiding Winfield-Mt. Union to third place in the eight-team Class 1A state field with a 332-317–649.

Oleson’s 3-over par two-day total engineered North Union’s sixth-place team finish of 346-329–675 during the program’s first-ever state golf appearance.

Senior Nathan Eaton bounced back from a first-round 87 on Friday to fire an 80 for North Union during final-round action on Saturday.

Eaton penciled in eight pars and sank birdie putts on Nos. 12 and 14 to pace his final 18 holes in Marshalltown en route to a 27th-place individual showing at 87-80–167.
