No. 10 Tigers scratch Cardinals

FAIRMONT — A Los Angeles Dodgers scout made the trip to Herb Wolf Field in Fairmont to evaluate future University of Oklahoma baseball player Dylan Criquet-Danielson’s diamond skills.

Ironically, Criquet-Danielson went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and did not figure much into the Class 3A, No. 10-ranked Marshall Tigers’ 7-3 victory over the Fairmont Cardinals on Friday.

Leadoff batter Mason Penske, however, continued to wear out Fairmont pitching by going 3-for-3, with a walk, and two runs scored, while right-hander Jake Hess pitched five solid innings of one-run baseball to trigger Marshall’s Big South Conference decision.

“We just can’t seem to find a way to get that guy out. We even put a defensive shift on him today, and he still managed to get a hit,” Fairmont head coach Todd Sukalski said in reference to the Tigers’ left-handed hitting Penske.

Penske beat the shift that placed Fairmont shortstop Nate Kallenbach directly behind second base by punching an infield hit just left of the bag. The fleet-footed Penske swiped second base, took third on Ryan Van Moer’s groundout, stayed put on a walk to Criquet-Danielson and raced home on Zach Thompson’s sacrifice fly to center for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

The Cardinals, however, displayed their offensive firepower to match the Tigers with a solo run in the home half of the first.

Collin Steuber lined a leadoff double down the right-field line and later scored on Sam Schwieger’s RBI single to right to knot the game at 1-all. Schwieger collected three of Fairmont’s 10 hits and generated a game-best three RBIs.

Criquet-Danielson utilized his outstanding speed to manufacture a solo run in the top of the third. The Tigers’ centerfielder drilled a leadoff single, took second on a wild pitch and wheeled to third on Thompson’s single to center. The future Sooners baseball player crossed the plate when Fairmont could not turn a double play on Hess’ grounder to third.

Penske displayed his speed on the base paths in the fourth, singling with two out before reaching second on one of the Cardinals’ four errors. Oddly, Criquet-Danielson and Thompson drew back-to-back walks to force home Penske for a 3-1 edge.

Hess later assisted his own cause by lining a leadoff single to trigger a four-run, nine at-bat top of the fifth to build a 7-1 lead. Courtesy runner Nick Klaith advanced to third on Kaleb Bossuyt’s double to left before scoring on Ryan Landmark’s RBI single to left.

Bossuyt later crossed the plate on Brock Boerboom’s RBI fielder’s choice before Penske dropped down a bunt hit to load the bases in the fifth. Van Moer extended Marshall’s margin to 7-1 via a two-run single to left.

Steuber and Schwieger played key roles in the Cardinals’ last at-bat comeback. Steuber legged out an infield hit with one out before advancing 90 feet on a walk to Kallenbach.

Brady Allen smacked a single to left before Schwieger produced his third hit of the game to plate pinch runner Nick Segar and Kallenbach for two more RBIs.

Tigers’ submarining-style reliever Kenneth Morris, however, averted any more damage in the Cardinals’ home half of the seventh by notching the last of his two strikeouts to go with a game-ending infield popout.

“We produced more hits than Marshall — 10 to 9 — but we left too many runners on base today,” said Sukalski, whose lineup stranded nine. “Our situational hitting wasn’t good, but give Marshall credit — they made the defensive plays, including a pair of double plays, when they had to.”

Steuber went 2-for-4, while Lance Becker, Kallenbach, Jordan Wolter and Jacob Tennyson each added hits for the Cardinals.

Tennyson allowed three runs — two earned — on four hits in four frames of work to take the loss. He struck out three and walked four.

Allen gave up four runs on five hits in three innings of relief for Fairmont.

Hess allowed only one run while scattering seven hits over five frames to earn the victory for the Tigers. The right-hander struck out five and walked only one.

Morris gave up two runs on three hits, struck out two, walked one and hit one batter in two innings of relief.
