Fairmont tracksters breeze to triangular sweep

Lardy, Whitehead 7th, 13th at Hamline Elite Meet

JACKSON — Hayden Berhow swept the jumps and Lizzy Subbert took both hurdles crowns as the Fairmont Cardinals boys and girls track & field teams won Jackson County Central’s triangular on Thursday.

The Cardinals girls generated 117 points, while the boys totaled 119 points. Martin County West Mavericks girls were second with 37 points and the Mavericks boys team finished with 27 points for third.

Berhow, who won all three jumps at the Buc Invite on April 18, swept the jumps for the second time this season. He leaped 39 feet, 10 1/4 inches in the triple jump, cleared a 5-10 in the high jump and recorded a 20-9 in the long jump.

“Hayden’s long jump was 1 1/2 inches further than he’s ever jumped,” Cardinals head coach Bob Bonk said.

Teammates Josh Heinze finished behind Berhow in the long jump with an 18-6 1/2 and Tyler Johnson posted a 5-8 in the high jump for second. Mavericks jumper Andrew Ringnell pocketed a runnerup distance of 27-6 in the triple jump.

Theo Krumholz added a throws sweep to the Cardinals’ winning effort Krumholz threw the discus 120-9, followed by Conner Tordsen’s 114-9, and recorded a winning distance of 40-2 in the shot put. Kade Fritz was second with a 39-11.

The Cardinals also won all four relay races. Kaleb Hoye, Brandon Williams, Cody Lane and Dayton Pasch broke the tape in 9:27.1 for a 4×800-meter relay win.

Pasch raced with Leyton Becker, Andrew Moeller and Dylan Kennedy in the 4×400 and 4×200 to win with times of 3:40.0 and 1:38.59, respectively.

Heinze, Johnson, Shyiem Thomas and Seth Carlmark added a winning effort of 47.37 in the 4×100.

Individually, Moeller finished second in the 800 (2:14.13).

Fairmont’s Nick Thate won the pole vault (8-6), while Lucas Simpson and Johnson went 1-2 in the high hurdles with times of 17.63 and 17.75, respectively. Johnson finished the 300-meter hurdles in 46.09 for a second runnerup performance.

Maverick sprinter Dawson Burkhardt and Cardinal Wyatt Quiring went 1-2 in both the open 100 and 200.

Burkhardt finished the 100 in 11.72 to Quiring’s 11.91, then crossed the finish line in 23.78 and 24.15, respectively. Quiring also finished second in the 400 with a time of 52.93.

Fairmont’s Nathan Willett won the 1,600-meter run in 5:19.4 and recorded an 11:41.47 in the 3,200 for second.

Jake Lewis won the two-mile race (11:28.0) and Zane Borchardt placed second in the mile (5:28.23) for Martin County West.

Subbert completed the high hurdles in 17.38 and clocked a 52.0 in the 300-meter hurdles to pace the Cardinals’ girls team win. Emma Koehler finished second in the highs (18.13).

Subbert jumped to a winning distance of 4-8 in the high jump and runnerup spot in the triple jump (31-7). Bethany Linse and Abby Tonder tied for second in the high jump with a 4-6.

Cardinal twins Brenna Cutler and Claire Cutler were 1-2 in the shot put, measuring 35-8 and 31-6. The two reversed the order in the discus with Claire Cutler throwing a winning distance of 105-5. Brenna Cutler measured a 99-5.

Andrea Thate won the pole vault (8-0) and Grace Higgins ran to a first-place time of 13.83 for Fairmont.

Iliana Ramon won the 1,600 in 5:38 with Molly Hawkins coming in next at 5:42.

“Iliana and Molly turned in very good times to finish first and second in the 1,600,” Bonk said.

Ramon ran a 2:39.49 for second in the 800, only behind Martin County West runner and Class A state cross country runnerup Marissa Whitehead, who posted a winning time of 2:35.0.

The Cardinals girls team also swept the relays. Joni Becker, Grace Higgins, Molly Hawkins and Jenna Pavich won the 4×400 in 4:19.0, while Becker ran with Savanah Baker, Brooke Hunwardsen and Jenna Gustafson for first in the 4×200-meter relay (1:54.44).

Cardinals Baker, Gustafson and Hunwardsen then teammed with Cori Emler to run the 4×100 in 54.35 for first place. Laura Thompson, Tabitha Thatcher, Sarah Krumholz and Emily Haugen recorded an 11:10.6 for a first-place showing in the 4×800. Thompson marked a 12:22.97 in the 3,200-meter race for second.

Pavich also provided Fairmont with victories in the 200 with a time of 27.49 and the 400-meter run (1:01.95).

“Once again, Jenna excelled in the open 200 and 400,” Bonk said.

Maverick Cora Olson won the long jump (16-0) and triple jump (32-5), and posted a second-best time of 27.98 in the 200.

The Mavericks raced a 4:38.87 in the 4×400-meter relay for a runnerup finish.

Fairmont’s boys (16-1) and girls (16-1) lineups play host to the 62nd running of the Sentinel Relays at 4:15 p.m. Friday at Bob Bonk Track in Fairmont.

Martin County West competes at Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in Lake Crystal. Jackson County Central competes in a seven-team meet at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Redwood Falls.

ST. PAUL — Fairmont’s Alli Lardy threw the shot put 39 feet, 3 3/4 inches for seventh place, while Martin County West’s Marissa Whitehead placed 13th in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11 minutes, 30 seconds at the Hamline Elite Meet on Friday in St. Paul.
