Cardinals tennis deals loss to Trojans

WORTHINGTON — The Fairmont Cardinals boys tennis team beat the Worthington Trojans, 4-2, during a rain-shortened Big South Conference dual meet on Monday in Worthington.

Cardinals’ No. 1 doubles players Tony Joseph and Blake Haugen were in the third set with Kyle Janssen and Cade Lindner when the match was suspended due to rain. Joseph and Haugen won the first set, 7-5, and lost the second 7-6 (8-6).

At No. 1 singles, Carter Klanderud beat Blaine Doeden, 6-4, 6-1, for a Fairmont victory. Tyler Head added a 6-1, 6-0 win over Leo Duarte at the second singles spot. Andy Hagen rebounded from a 6-4 first-set loss to defeat Sully Merrigan, 6-2, 7-5, in the final two sets.

Kipton Jenson provided the Trojans with their singles win, topping Tyrell Zieske, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.

Pokwar Taw and Max Langerud recorded the Trojans’ other meet point with a 6-1, 6-2, victory against Connor Madsen and Thomas Klanderud at second doubles.

Ben Hernes partnered with Aaron Hendricks and took a 6-3, 6-1 win against Carter Ponto and Lam Pham at No. 3.

Fairmont (3-4) travels to St. James Area today for a 4:30 p.m. Big South dual meet.

Waseca 7, Blue Earth Area 0 — The Waseca Bluejays swept the Blue Earth Area Bucs, 7-0, during a Big South Conference boys tennis dual meet on Monday in Waseca.

Blue Earth Area freshman Jack Frundt forced his No. 1 singles match with Waseca freshman Jacob Butterfield to a super tiebreaker in place of a third set.

Butterfield claimed the first set by a 6-4 decision before Frundt reversed the score in the second set in his favor.

Butterfield netted the point for the Bluejays on the strength of a 13-11 extended super tiebreaker.

Charlie Huttemier posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory over the Bucs’ Spencer Petersen at second singles, while the Bluejays’ Jay Lewer netted back-to-back 6-1 set wins over Jack Barke at the No. 3 spot in the single bracket.

J.P. Swanson wrapped up Waseca’s singles sweep by shutting out Nick Frundt at the fourth position in the lineup, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles action, Tom Donelan and Ritchie Diedrich combined to serve a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Spenser Timmerman and James Greer at the No. 1 spot, while Waseca’s Jim Hoehn and Oswaldo Badillo teamed for a 6-1, 6-0 second doubles win over Vern Johnson and Jacob Olson.

Earl Hansen and Jacob Hulscher completed the Bluejays’ doubles sweep by zipping Marcos Gonzalez and Gannon Haase at the No. 3 position, 6-0, 6-0.

Blue Earth Area plays host to Worthington at 4:30 p.m. today at the Cardinal Courts in Fairmont. The Bucs’ home courts in Blue Earth are available at the time.

Waseca (2-6, 1-1 Big South Conference) travels to St. Peter today for another 4:30 p.m. conference dual meet.
