FAIRMONT — For the second time in three days, the Fairmont Cardinals boys and girls track & field teams won a meet. This time, it came on their home turf in a triangular with the Madelia/ Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther Jayhawks and the Luverne Cardinals on Thursday at Bob Bonk Track.

Fairmont’s boys team scored 116 points to Luverne’s runner-up total of 48 and the Jayhawks’ 21 points, while the Fairmont girls team topped Luverne, 91 1/2-64. The Jayhawks girls recorded 30 1/2 points.

“Our times weren’t quite as good as Tuesday, but the weather wasn’t as good and we were a little tired. I thought we had some outstanding performances,” Fairmont head coach Bob Bonk said.

Lizzy Subbert swept the hurdles and took the high jump and triple jump crowns for Fairmont. She ran the high hurdles in 16.8 seconds to go with a 50.8 in the 300-meter hurdles, while recording 4 feet, 8 inches in the high jump and 21-11 3/4 in the triple.

Megan Hawkins, Subbert’s teammate, posted a 53.4 in the 300 hurdles for third. Jayhawks’ Renae Wallace and Abby Calkins went 2-3 in the high hurdles with times of 17.7 and 17.8, respectively.

Fairmont’s 4×400 relay team of Grace Higgins, Molly Hawkins, Joni Becker and Jenna Pavich paced a 4:18 en route to the relay victory. Makayla Hall, Renae Wallace, Lizzie Cooling and Hannah Johanson marked a second-best time of 4:44.9 for the Jayhawks.

Brenna Cutler threw 37-9 1/2 in the shot put and Andrea Thate vaulted to a measurement of 8-0 for two more Fairmont field event wins. Claire Cutler placed second in the discus at 111-7.

Fairmont’s Iliana Ramon won the 1,600-meter run (5:40) and placed third in the 3,200 with a time of 12:18.6 behind Laura Thompson’s 3,200-meter runner-up time of 12:10. Sarah Krumholz added third-place showings in the mile (5:51) and 800-meter race (2:45.3) to Fairmont’s track effort. Molly Hawkins ran a 2:33.5 in the 800 for the second spot.

Pavich won the open 400 (1:03), and Becker followed with a 1:04.2, while Cooling finished third (1:07.2).

Johanson won the long jump, measuring 15-10 1/4 and finished second in the 100 with a time of 13.6. Fairmont’s Brooke Hunwardsen finished behind Johanson in the open 100 (13.7), and Cooling leaped 14-0 1/4 for third in the long jump.

Fairmont’s Bethany Linse and MTGHECML’s Rachel Schultz tied for second in the high jump at a height of 4-6.

Wyatt Quiring won the 100, 200 and 400 to help Fairmont boys team’s winning effort. Quiring posted an 11.3 in the 100, followed by Shyiem Thomas (11.7) and Levi Bulfer (11.8). The junior speedster then took the 200-meter race in 23.7 with Bulfer placing second (24.6) and Jayhawk Josh Sletta marking a third-place effort of 25.1. Bulfer added a winning performance of 18-5 1/2 in the long jump, and Hayden Berhow posted an 18-1 1/2 for second.

“Levi Bulfer is a big surprise in the long jump. He hadn’t done that for quite a while, so that was fun,” Bonk said.

Quiring’s 400 time of 52.6 allowed him a third win. Dylan Kennedy ran a 54.2 for a Fairmont runner-up spot.

Fairmont’s Leyton Becker and Kellen Rodriguez went 1-2 in the 1,600 with times of 5:03.5 and 5:20.8, respectively, and Bryant Berhow finished third for the Jayhawks (5:27.2).

Andrew Moeller won the 3,200-meter relay (10:44.6) and ran with Kennedy, Brandon Williams and Cody Lane to win the 4×800 in 9:07.3 for Fairmont. MTGHECML’s group of Ramiro Zamora, John Lagunas, Angel Zamora and Jarly Godoy took second in 9:11.4.

“He (Moeller) had an unusual combination of 4×800, 400 and 3,200. That’s quite a range, and all three are tough races,” Bonk said. “He handled all that really well.”

Kennedy, along with Leyton Becker, Dayton Pasch and Seth Carlmark, paced a 3:41.9 for top honors in the 4×400-meter relay for Fairmont. The Jayhawks’ Ramiro Zamora, Angel Zamora, Godoy and Lagunas were second (3:46.1).

Pasch won the 800 in 2:12.6, and Devin Johnson hurdled his way to first in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 46.9. Tyler Johnson, Lucas Simpson and Berhow were the top three finishers, respectively, in the high jump to add more Fairmont points. Tyler Johnson won with a 5-10, followed by Simpson (5-10) and Berhow (5-6).

Berhow netted the runner-up spot in the triple jump with a 40-0, followed by Sletta’s third-place measurement of 39-0. Kade Fritz threw 44-3 in the shot put for second, and Theo Krumholz finish third in each of the shot put (43-4 1/4) and discus (111-1) events.

“We had so many people score points, and I think that’s the key to the boys’ team. We can score in every event, and we did that again,” Bonk said.

Fairmont competes with Worthington in the St. James triangular, and Madelia/Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther travels to Maple River for a dual meet on Tuesday.
