MTGHECML girls tracksters win title; North Union nets 5th

MOUNTAIN LAKE — The Madelia/Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther Jayhawks girls track & field team won the Mountain Lake Area Invitational, while the Jayhawks boys team netted a third-place finish on Thursday.

Renae Wallace won the 110-meter hurdles and placed second in the triple jump, while running the second leg of the 4×400-meter relay to help the Jayhawks to a winning total of 146 points.

Wallace hurdled her way to a first-place showing of 17.5 seconds and recorded a second-best distance of 31 feet, 6 1/2 inches in the triple jump. She then ran with Lizzie Cooling, Hannah Johanson and Makayla Hall in the 4×400 for a time of 4:32.22.

Johanson then won the 4×200 relay with Amy Denn, Lillian Maul and Alyssa Chloros in 1:57.39. Johanson added a long jump victory with a 14-10 and Cooling recorded a 13-1 1/2 for sixth place, while Rachel Schultz netted a runner-up finish of 4-8 in the high jump.

Denn added a third-place finish in the shot put (32-6) and a sixth-best time of 30:95 in the 200.

Abby Calkins was the runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles with a 17.9 and 54.45, respectively. She added a fifth-place finish in the 200, crossing the finish line in 30.72. Brooke Grathwohl was fifth in the 300 hurdles (1:01.38) and Hall placed fourth in the triple jump (29-4).

Cooling was second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:07.71 and Angel Thate and Sylvia Rodriguez followed directly with times of 1:13.13 and 1:11.33, respectively. Cooling (2:48.13) and CaleyAnn Clobes (2:50.67) finished third and fifth in the open 800. Clobes also timed a 6:23.27 in the 1,600 for third.

Rodriguez won the 3,200 (12:59.08) and marked a 6:04.41 in the 1,600 for the runner-up spot.

Denn, Maul, Hall and Chloros recorded a 57.27 in the 4×100, finishing fifth, and Jada DeLaCruz marked a fourth-best distance of 72-7 in the discus.

Josh Sletta won two track events and added a runner-up finish as the Jayhawks boys tallied 98 points for third place in the meet. Sletta won the 200 with a time of 24.40 and leaped to a top distance of 17-6 in the long jump while placing second in the triple jump (38-10).

Angel Zamora won the triple jump with a 39-11. He then went 2-3 with Ramiro Zamora with finishing times of 55.71 and 57.24.

The two ran together with John Lagunas and Jarly Godoy to place second in the 4×800 relay with a time of 9:00.45. The team added another runnerup spot in the 4×400-meter relay (3:50.71).

Godoy finished second in the 800 (2:12.57) and fourth in the long jump (16-1). Lagunas ran the 800 in 2:20.38 for third and jumped to a fifth-place effort of 4-10 in the high jump.

Jordan Osborne placed sixth in the 100 (13.29) and threw 35-5 for fifth in the shot put.

Ramiro Zamora record 16-0 in the long jump and Bryant Berhow finished the 800 in 2:24.22 as both placed sixth in their respective events. Noah Frelich was fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12:94.

Madelia/Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther competes at Lake Crystal-Wellcome/Memorial-Nicollet on Tuesday.

North Iowa Relays

Kyarsten Mullen produced 22 of the North Union girls track team’s 63 points as the Warriors placed fifth at the North Iowa Relays on Thursday in Buffalo Center, Iowa.

Central Springs captured the girls divisional crown with 148 points.

Mullen raced to runner-up showings in the 100-meter dash by breaking the tape in 13.6 seconds and the 100-meter high hurdles (17.59), while producing a time of 28.3 to capture third place in the open 200.

North Union’s Bre Anderson added a first-place time of 5:53.3 in the 1,500-meter run.

The Warriors’ 4×200-meter relay squad of Rory McClellan, Chloe Lofstrom, Liz Stauffer and Alexis Valvick broke the tape in 1:58.99 for the top spot, while the 4×100 relay quartet of Stauffer, McClellan, Valvick and Mullen ran to a third-place time of 56.48.

North Union’s 4×400 of McClellan, Lofstrom, Stauffer and Bre Anderson, along with the 1,600-meter distance medley foursome of Erin Hintegen, Emily Paulson, Nicole Burgeson and Bre Anderson recorded fourth-place finishes with times of 4:51.99 and 5:19.80, respectively.

North Union’s 800-meter sprint medley squad of Aly Bierstedt, Hallie Reese, Paulson and McClellan timed a 2:07.21 for fifth place.

Lofstrom cleared the 400-meter hurdles in 1:19.02 for a fourth-place showing for North Union, while Aly Bierstedt finished the open 100 with a ninth-place time of 15.9.

Reese crossed the finish line in the 200-meter dash in 32.51 for 10th place. Jazeman Anderson netted an eighth-place finish in the open 400 and took 11th in the 800 with times of 1:20.24 and 3:18.12, respectively. Burgeson took the 10th spot in the 800 (3:08.98).

Kaitlyn Bierstedt and Maci Marlow placed eighth and ninth in the shot put, throwing 27 feet, 8 1/4 inches and 26-8, respectively.

Bierstedt also leaped to an 11-7 in the long jump, giving her an eighth-place finish. May Laverty threw 83-10 in the discus for sixth and McClellan recorded a mark of 59-7 for 11th.

North Union plays host to the Elliott/Godfredsen Relays at 4:30 p.m. Monday in Armstrong.

ELC Relays

The North Union Warriors boys track & field team scored 39 points for a fifth-place showing on Thursday in Estherville.

Riley Bauer used his state-winning cross country running skills to win the 3,200 in 10:23.07, while Elliott Hagebock and Derek Thompson added runner-up finishes. Hagebock recorded a 5-10 in the high jump and Thompson marked a 11.8 in the open 100 for second place.

Cody Geerdes netted third in the long jump with a 19-2 and fifth in the high hurdles with a time of 17.48.

Geerdes ran the shuttle hurdle relay with Trent Pedersen, Nate Joyce and Caedyn Sandvig for a fourth-place time of 1:08.35.

North Union hosts the Elliott/Godfredsen Relays at 4:30 p.m. Monday in Armstrong.

Spirit Lake Invite

The Warriors boys teams tallied 49 points for fourth while the girls team recorded 32 points for fifth during the Spirit Lake Invitational on Tuesday in Spirit Lake, Iowa.

Riley Bauer won the 1,600 in 4:24.57 and Elliott Hagebock topped the high jump with a 5-11. Cody Geerdes occupied the runnerup spot of 19-1 3/4 in the long jump and recorded a 17.80 for fourth in the 110-meter hurdles. Trent Pedersen added a third-place finish of 40-10 1/2, while Isaac Engeman threw a 34-11 for 10th in the shot put.

Caedyn Sandvig finished 10th in the 110-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles with times of 20.10 and 1:11.15, respectively. Derek Thompson placed third in the open 100 with an 11.99 and Blake Crawmer ran the 200 in 24.89 for fourth place.

Braden Pierce placed 10th in the 800 with a time of 2:25.50. The 4×100 team of Hagebock, Thompson, Crawmer and Jordi Rodriguez marked a sixth-place time of 47.69.

On the girls’ side, Kyarsten Mullen won two events and finished second in another for the Warriors. Mullen timed a 13.22 in the 100 and 28.10 in the 200 while running the 100-meter hurdles in 17.23 for second.

Mullen then ran with Olivia Marlow, Alexis Valvick and Liz Stauffer to place fifth in the 4×100 with a time of 55.25.

Olivia Marlow ran the 200 in 30.84 for seventh, and Alexis Valvick recorded an eighth-place showing of 14.45 in the open 100.

Maddie Rolling placed ninth in the hurdles with a 19.98.

Bre Anderson paced a 5:57.37 for seventh in the 1,500-meter run, while Maci Marlow and Kaitlyn Bierstedt went 8-9 in the shot put for a 27-9 1/2 and 28-10 1/4, respectively. Aly Bierstedt placed 10th in the long jump with a 11-6 1/2.

Anderson teammed with Erin Hentegen, Emily Paulson ad Nicole Burgeson for a fifth-place showing in the 1,600-meter medley relay with a time of 5:09.80.
