Cardinals take 17 events in indoor meet

MANKATO — The Fairmont Cardinals boys and girls track & field teams combined to win 17 events during an indoor meet showcase on Friday at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

The Cardinals girls team won the medley, 4×200- and 4×400-meter relays. Molly Hawkins, Andrea Thate, Mikayla Stradtman and Savanah Baker combined forces to mark a first-place time of 4:52.4 in the medley relay. Brooke Hunwardsen ran with Jenna Gustafson, Grace Higgins and McKayla Chambers to complete the 4×200 relay in 2:01.2 for the top spot.

Hunwardsen, who was sixth in the pole vault with a measurement of six feet, and Higgins then ran with Molly Hawkins and Jenna Pavich to win the 4×400 race in a time of 4:30.1. Pavich also added a top finish in the 60-meter run (8.5) and the open 800 with a time of 2:39.6. Sadie Sandersfeld finished fifth in the 60 with a time of 8.9, while Anna Sundblad and Kobi Malo completed the 800 in 3:01.6 for fifth and 3:17.3 for sixth, respectively.

Cardinal speedster Laura Thompson marked a first-place time of 1:09.5 in the 400-meter run, and Sandersfeld was fifth with a time of 1:11. Iliana Ramon won the 1,600-meter race (5:59.4), followed by Sarah Krumholz’s fourth-place time of 6:06.3 and Emily Haugen’s time of 6:08.6 for fifth.

Lizzie Subbert added another win for the Cardinals, topping the low hurdles in 10 seconds while finishing third in the high hurdles (10.3) and second in the high jump (5-0). Emma Koehler took the fourth spot in the low hurdles and fifth in the high hurdles with times of 10.7 and 10.9. Chambers ran the low hurdles in 10.8 for fifth, while Bethany Linse finished sixth in the high hurdles (11.2).

Alli Lardy posted a measurement of 36-11 to win the shot put event.

Haugen, Megan Hawkins, Sundblad and Thompson ran the 4×800 relay in 11:12.4 to finish second behind New Ulm (10:46.6). Baker placed third in the 200 (30.5) and fourth in the triple jump (30-3 1/2), while Linse and Abby Tonder went 3-4 in the high jump, recording measurements of 4-8 and 4-4, respectively.

Higgins jumped out to 14-0 1/2 for third in the long jump, and Brielle Meade went 13-1 1/2 for sixth. Andrea Thate was third in the pole vault (8-6).

For the boys, Andrew Moeller, Chris Lebert, Lucas Simpson, Hayden Berhow, Levi Bulfer and Kade Fritz pocketed individual crowns on Friday. Moeller’s 2:13.5 allowed him the top spot in the 800, followed by Jacob Lueth for fifth (2:31.5). Lebert and Simpson went 1-2 in the low hurdles with times of 9.4 and 9.5, respectively, before Simpson (9.6) and Lebert (9.7) finished second and third in the highs. Simpson then won the high jump, going 6-0, followed by Berhow for second (5-10).

Berhow won the triple jump with a measurement of 40-2 3/4 and Leyton Becker finished third with a 35-3 1/4. Bulfer, who was the runnerup in the 60 with a 7.4, won the pole vault with a 4-6. Nick Thate and Austin Schwidder recorded a 9-6 and 8-6, respectively, finishing third and fourth in the vault.

Fritz posted a first-place finish in the shot put (43-7), followed by Theo Krumholz for third with a 41-5. Bulfer, Schwidder, Berhow and Shyiem Thomas took to the track to win the 4×200 relay with a time of 1:41.3. Schwidder then ran with Becker, Moeller and Josh Heinze to win the medley relay in 4:04.1. The Cardinals’ 4×800 relay team of Dayton Pasch, Kellen Rodriguez, Dylan Kennedy and Brandon Williams finished second with a 9:28.9, and Becker, Pasch, Heinze and Williams finished third in the 4×400 relay (3:59.5).

Kennedy placed fourth in the open 400 with a time of 55.6 before Kaleb Hoye’s sixth-place time of 60 seconds. Heinze marked a 17-8 1/4 in the long jump and Thomas went 17-8 for third and fifth, while Nathan Willett had a fourth-place showing of 5:20.1 in the 1,600-meter run.
