Red Bulls advance 6 to Section 3AA semifinals

REDWOOD FALLS — Six Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls wrestlers pocketed quarterfinal wins during the opening day of the Section 3AA individual tournament on Friday in Redwood Falls.

The six Red Bulls will compete in the semifinals, starting at 10 a.m. today at Redwood Valley High School in Redwood Falls.

Jordan Wolter, Zac Ringnell and Payton Anderson started with victories in the opening round of the meet before beating their quarterfinal opponents. Jaxson Rohman, Cale Steuber and Collin Steuber wrestled only once, topping their foes in the quarterfinal match.

Wolter started the day by pinning Quad County’s Sam Ohliger in 29 seconds before using 57 seconds to flatten Noah Jensen of Marshall at 120 pounds in the quarterfinals.

Wolter wrestles Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove 120-pounder Derek Ellingson for a chance at the championship match. Ellingson reached the semifinals with a 16-1 technical fall over Redwood-River Valley’s Jaxon Lang.

Likewise, Ringnell, who is ranked 10th among the Class AA 126-pound wrestlers, pinned Worthington grappler Lay K Paw in 4:34. In the quarterfinals, Ringnell needed 3:01 to assemble a 16-0 technical fall over Christian Kuball of Fulda/Murray County Central. Ringnell moves on to face Quad County’s Jordan Odegard, who beat Marshall’s Lucas Hodges, 8-3.

Payton Anderson’s 9-2 decision over Wabasso-Red Rock Central’s Calvin Anderson was enough to get the Red Bull to the quarterfinals. He then pinned Fulda/Murray County Central’s Keigan Behnke in 32 seconds.

Payton Anderson will wrestle Marshall’s Dylan Dulas, who pinned Luverne’s Riley Baker in 2:58, in the semifinals.

The No. 2-ranked 106-pounder Rohman took an 11-0 major decision against TMB/WWG’s Ayden Homer in the quarterfinals, and wrestles against Wabasso/Red Rock Central’s Mason Irlbeck in the semifinals. Irlbeck reached the 106-pound semifinals on the strength of a 6-4 decision over Fulda/MCC’s Owen Bertram.

At 113 pounds, Red Bulls wrestler Cale Steuber used a takedown and near fall to advance over Worthington’s Damon Schutz, 4-0. Cale Steuber faces Fulda/MCC’s Danny Blankenship in the semifinals. Blankenship pinned Wabasso/RRC’s Ben Johnson in 5:13 in the quarterfinals.

Collin Steuber, who’s sixth-ranked at 152, wrestled at 160 and put Dawson-Boyd’s Mondo Miki on his back in 1:42 to get to the semifinals today. Steuber’s opponent will be TMB/WWG’s Nash Mayer, who used a 5-0 decision against Redwood-River Valley’s James Ploeger to reach the semifinals.

Fairmont/Martin County West 152-pounder Miles Fitzgerald won his opening match against Fulda/MCC’s Jon Gehl, but lost in the quarterfinals. Fitzgerald pinned Gehl in 5:35, but fell to Luverne’s Jeremiah Dooyema via an 8-2 decision.

Fitzgerald moves to the wrestleback bracket and will compete against the winner of a match between Marshall’s Devyn Martzloff and Worthington’s Kyle Mullaney.

Red Bulls 138-pounder Nathan Simmonds lost via a 16-0 technical fall in 4:56 to New Ulm’s Hunter Ranweiler. Simmonds will face Quad County wrestler Ayden Friese in a wrestleback match today.

Mario Maldonado (145), Tristan Lange (170), Conner Tordsen (182) and Theo Krumholz (220) also will compete in the wrestlebacks at their respective weights. Maldonado lost a 5-4 decision to Worthington’s Brayden Donkersloot in the quarterfinals, and will face TMB/WWG’s Austin Axford in the first round of the wrestleback matches.

Dawson-Boyd wrestler Colton Struxness used a 3:32 fall to defeat Lange in the 170-pound quarterfinals. Lange awaits the winner of the first wrestleback match between New Ulm’s Lane Miller and Quad County’s Stephan Countryman.

Tordsen was pinned in 48 seconds by Dawson-Boyd grappler Austin Schmitt, and faces New Ulm’s Hunter Landsteiner in a wrestleback match.

Luverne’s Zach Luke used 2:50 to pin Krumholz. The Red Bulls 220-pounder opens the wrestleback bracket with a match against New Ulm’s Colby Wenninger today in Redwood Falls.
